(Apologies if anything is awkwardly formatted – I am on Mobile / also throwaway due to privacy reasons) Hi everyone, The union contract for the Real Canadian Superstore employees ended in August of last year. The company and the union (UFCW247) went back to the drawing board and finally released a copy that unionized employees could vote on. The main (and really only thing that I was repeatedly told) piece that they wanted was a better pay scale. I agree with this 100%. Cost of living has gone up and the main chunk of the stores employees are either: • International Students surviving on minimum wage while only being able to work 20 hours a week. • University Students who live alone and are trying to make it until next payday • 35+ year old individuals who work to support their family and are either one of the breadwinners, or…
Month: May 2022
For obvious reasons, I'm going to try and keep most of this fairly vague. For the past few months I've been working remote for a company that I had, for awhile, thought was pretty great. They also seemed to really appreciate my work, said I provided insight they really needed, etc. Trouble started about two months ago, when I was faced with a possible emergency that would conflict with a meeting. I let one of the meeting coordinators know about the possibility beforehand. I did end up being late. The next day I had another meeting that my calendar didn't notify me about. Manager talked to me about how he had to report both incidents to HR (even after I specified I had warned a meeting coordinator about the issue with the first incident) and continued infractions could lead to termination. Things seemed to be going ok, great even as…
$9 an hour for your bachelors
I was reading here in antiwork, and I thought it can't be that bad For context, I was 7 mo. pregnant at the start of the pandemic, and my employer refused to give me remote work so I quit. It required a lifestyle adjustment, but it was well worth it, considering we are all alive and healthy. Side bonus that it spurred my husband into finding a better paying job. Anyway, I do side gigs and have a small pension to get by. I haven't been able to go back to work because child care is $300 a week where I live and we make “too much money” (over 22k) to get vouchers. So I've pretty much given up until my youngest is able to go to school or prices come down (spoiler alert they wont.) Anyways I was reading here and I decided to look at my old indeed…
Not necessary location wise, but income wise. $36k/ year in So Cal is nothing. Born and raised here. Family and friends are here, so if I moved it would be just me, definitely not doing that. It seems like most posts here are about “the office”, or working in Tech/IT or people that “only” make $50k, etc Definitely discouraging for someone like me lol. My shifts are all over the place, 7-4, 10-7, 2-11 etc. 8-5 and weekends off sounds like a dream. Anyway, I only have an Associates from 10 years ago (oof). What I wanted to do just never worked out What jobs are out there that don’t necessarily take a ton of skill? I don’t mind doing manual labor, I just want out of this grocery store already. I’d rather not even be a department manager there. It means nothing. You all know that. I just need…
Busted my ass for a pay cut
I work as a restaurant manager that runs both the front and back of house at a hotel that has scenic views but is crumbling apart due to lack of maintenance. This is my first “”big boy”” job after graduating college and when I started out last year, it was actually a pretty sweet deal! I had a boss that would bust his ass to make sure that our employees weren’t constantly in the weeds and would address criticism in the most gentle and constructive manner. We didn’t always see eye to eye on certain things like plate presentation or advertising, but because he was consistently willing to take the time to help us out during service, I would gladly do things his way. Fast forward to January and he breaks the news that his wife has accepted a high paying job in another state and will be leaving us…
Dang I want Garden leave
Zero sum situation.
I work at a privately owned gas station and have been dealing with one of the most annoying bosses I've ever had the displeasure of meeting. For context I have adhd, discalculia and am borderline legally blind. The boss I'm having issues with has been grieving me over not being able to memorize the prices of every item in our store and there are over two thousand items that are not marked nor are they in the system meaning they don't scan. Because its managements responsibility keep our inventory listed in the system and updated with current pricing there is nothing I can do and often have to guess at prices. This had lead the above mentioned manager to go out of her way to reprimand me for not knowing the unknowable. Which make absolutely zero sense but I digress. Instead of owning the fault as it's her job to…
