Hear me out, that book/movie had, neglecting the child slave labor and terrible working/living conditions, a kind of fair working agreement: when you're done you're done. Would like to see that adopted more places. You got everything done you wanted in the first 2 hours? Enjoy your freedom from work the rest of the day!
Month: May 2022
I live in Puerto Rico (for those of you who don't know PR is a non incorporated US territory basically a Colony so our infrastructure mimics the US) Any how this state agency went and gave a conference looking for professionals, because after Hurricane Maria there's been a massive exodus of professionals to the states. Here's the catch, they want social workers (which I am), psychologist, admins, supervisors, etc. They never talked about the pay or benefits during the conference, their focus was “its a wonderful experience ” ” you are helping people” etc. Basically they pray on people's kindness and will to do good to hire them for slave wages. When my friend asked for the pay rate after the conference, they said, $1300 a month/$8.12 an hour. What a joke. No wonder everyone left looking for decent pay elsewhere.
All the red flags after 2 shifts.
Just need to talk into the void for a second. I (36m) took a part time job at a pizza place down the road from me to help pay the bills until craft market season kicks off. In 2 shifts I've seen so many health code violations it's put me off from eating there ever again, the “office ” has a mattress and bedding in it, they don't use any type of computer for orders and seem to have really inconsistent pricing/taxes, the owner smokes in the building and he's incredibly high strung. There's more but these are the most pressing. I work in less than 4 hours and my anxiety has a pretty firm hold on me right now. We need the money but is it worth my mental health? Thank you for letting me rant.

Work Dress Code—
I work in an office- front desk receptionist for a title & escrow company. It’s a decent job, really no issues except for this one. We are business casual. I wear dresses most days, for the majority of my dresses I wear western style dress boots. I’ve been told they are not business attire as cowboy boots aren’t allowed. I’m LIVID. I’m trying to compose an email to my manager using the employee handbook as my guide- all it says is ‘well maintained shoes’ & ‘no flip flops’. Any thoughts, ideas, etc? For added info I am in Texas- these boots are not just regular shit-kickers. The pair I have on today were close to a grand- the other pair were $300… I’m willing to die on this hill. I’ve included a pic of some that are similar- I can’t find the ones I have. https://www.google.com/shopping/product/16114485885812725579?q=lucchese+women%27s+boots+sizing&client=safari&hl=en-us&biw=375&bih=540&tbs=vw:g&prmd=sniv&prds=eto:15676278302575090101_0,cdl:1,prmr:1,cs:1
Last week I get called to drive 30 minutes for a 2 and a half minute interview. The guy takes me to his office where loud music is blaring on the speakers, door wide open, and simply tells me the hours, and asks my availability. He also couldn’t remember my name and had to ask 3 times start to finish. Overall very rude. Says he will call Monday. Never does. Two weeks later calls at 7:00am (I’m 19 and and university student so I’m not up that early) and says he wants to offer me job, with an accompanying email simply saying “hi, I want to offer you a job”. Probably the most undermining way I’ve been told you got the job but whatever. he wants me to confirm that I still want the position. Ok fine it’s been two weeks. I replied to his email and called him, no…
At this point I don't even know what is normal. Crazy times.
Called in yesterday
I had been working at Wendy’s for about 4 days at that point and despite not hating the work, simply existing in the kitchen of a fast food area filled me with pointless dread, taxing me spiritually. That and the last night I worked I was closing the grill section, finishing up with the last grill before the guy on dishes decides to swap to floors, something I was originally supposed to do, as well as chopping up chili meat and putting the extra raw meat in the fridge. When he did that though I got tasked with the dishes on top of everything mentioned above. I looked over to the sink and there were a literal mountain of dishes, some of which had been there for at least two hours. Plus inside the sink it was layered with grease and crud, which meant I had to clean that out…
