I have been a librarian for 4 years. It's what I've felt like I'm meant to do and I'm very good at it. Originally I wanted to go into academic librarianship, but I landed in a public library and this has been my home every since. I started out barely part-time and now I'm the adult programming lead. My direct supervisor even tells me all the time that I have the heart for this specific type of librarianship. Before I get to the promotion, let me try to paint of picture of what my library has been like the past year. It could easily be summed up in one word: chaos. Drugs and homelessness are a huge problem in the area and the county doesn't know the first thing about how to address it. So it spills into the library. It used to just be the occasional sleeper or person…
We finished early went and took a nice long break and drank a few margs my attitude towards work is better the company made money and I spent less in my hour long break than I made in the hour. Everyone's happy id work as many hours as I could if this was how work is
Just wanted to vent for the couple of people who may actually read this. I've been feeling like crap since yesterday (sore throat, congestion, all that jazz), but I wanted to still come in today to help the person I was working with to finish the load (I work at a grocery store). Store manager was apparently out today, so I asked the next in charge “hey is it cool if I leave a little earlier today? As soon as I'm done with the load? I'm really not feeling too hot” He said as long as the other person is cool with it, it's fine (and he was, he's a very nice guy). So I'm hard at work, trying to finish as fast as possible, then I get called to the front a few hours in. Apparently somebody else (who always calls in sick) called out, and I was needed…
Throwaway. Not sure if this is the right place but just needed to vent. I just left my old company after a bit over a year for various reasons. They tried to squeeze every last ounce of work out of us. The moment you get comfortable with the already heavy workload, they put more projects on you. Hungry 24 yr old recent grads like myself were already burnt out after a year or two. They mandated a return to their soul-crushing office, which is filled with propaganda about how great it was to work there, and all the management were yes men preaching the same. They paid less than industry standard and could get away with it for the most part. My raise was well below inflation despite their record profits last year (while everyone was remote). So I left for a better job… better pay, better company, more interesting…
just the blatant sexism
This post is just a rant, and nothing else. Call me a whiny little shit. Don't care. One of the senior managers at my ClientCo set up a Friday evening dinner meeting. 6.30 PM. First off – Fuck you for setting a Friday dinner meeting. I decided to deal with it because the manager says he is extremely busy and blah blah blah. I figure he probably is. It's now 8.30 PM in my time zone, I'm seated at this restaurant dick a dickhead, and he is still 'on his way'. For the last 1.5 hours. I have decided to take home a bite, skip this meeting and bill the client anyway. If they raise an issue, fuck them. I'll find another client. Time for supposed “senior managers” to stop treating their contractors like shit.
