The US is not a democracy. It is a Dictatorship of Finance whose needs require that your wages be suppressed to the fullest extent.

The Fed is an unelected institution that is subservient to elite financial interests and insulated from any democratic checks. And yet it is empowered to unilaterally set economic policies that affect all 330 million of us, to the detriment of the vast majority. https://www.npr.org/2022/06/29/1108109505/job-cuts-layoffs-economy-recession From the article: Fed Chair Jerome Powell says he and his colleagues are trying to stabilize a job market that is “unsustainably hot.” Wages have been rising at a fast clip in an economy where the unemployment rate is at 3.6%, which is very close to its pre-pandemic low. “You have two job vacancies essentially for every person actively seeking a job, and that has led to a real imbalance in wage negotiating,” Powell said when answering questions at a press conference two weeks ago. The Fed chair is aware of the pain that will be inflicted on more people as he wrestles with inflation and…

can they take my benefits away?

Edited to add: my employer has made contributions to my retirement during the years I have worked here. I understand that they can't take away my contributions, but wonder about the amount that they have contributed. Thanks for all the info so far! I agree that 6 months seems crazy and I'm looking for anything online to document that they can't really ask for that…. TLDR: If I leave my job without giving the notice that HR says I have to (6 months!), can they take away my benefits (retirement)? I work at a large fancy private college. My official position is Faculty, but I am not tenure stream, “real” faculty. (They just put me in that category because they don't have a Research Scientist category, as some colleges do. Basically I am a high-functioning lab tech.) HR policy is that Faculty need to give 6 months notice. For most…

Shopify layoffs

I'm not sure who needs to hear this, but I thought it important to get this information out there. Yesterday, Shopify laid off several teams (an entire department) with no notice or reason given. They were given a severance, but it was a literal situation of starting work one day and suddenly finding yourself locked out of systems. There were at least 50 people in the department. I don't know if the secrecy (they have told no one else in the company other than higher leadership) has any other connotations but it feels shady. The department head is still around (of course). At the moment I'm feeling very insecure in my position, so I think it's time to start looking for work elsewhere. Any suggestions for remote friendly work in Canada?

Circular Logic

-Background- So – I got this job in Feb 2020, a month before the pandemic shut everything down. I asked lots of questions during the first two weeks, because I wanted to be good at my job. The people who were supposed to be training me were fairly unresponsive – it took them an average of 9 hours before they'd answer any of my IMs or emails (and this was while we were in office). Then in March 2020, we went to a WFH model, with corporate stressing that this was temporary. My department apparently was not mentally equipped to train someone via Zoom, even though this is a desk job that is pretty much all about spreadsheets and administrative work. It was like being shoved into a boat with the oars taken away – no one on my team reached out to train or anything, and my questions were…

Stupid friggin hiring process is stupid

Okay, so once again I find myself here. I am entirely anti-work, but still need money, so I worked my ass off to try and get employment. Context; im 17. So, I applied to a few places, whatever, they all said no. But one of them in particular pissed me off. On the advice of everybody around me, I went in to the place I applied for online. I dressed nice, in black pants and a button up. In Florida. In 100 degree heat. black pants. Because of course. Whatever. I go into this place i'm not gonna name, but know it's a chain, but a small one. I politely ask for the manager, and the lady working there tells me the manager just left around five minutes ago. To maybe try again tomorrow. I also proceed to leave a physical copy of my resume, and per her request write…

In terms of years, what qualifies as basic experience?

This is a question that's been burning my brain for years now. Why is 5 years not enough for intermediate or even advanced work? A lot of companies will have a minimum level of experience, with most being 5, to achieve basic level work. If I have 5 years under my belt, why would I do basic work, that's already been done?

Has anyone here started a business?

If so, what are you doing to make things fair for your employees? Are you doing a shared ownership model with new employees? Are you profit sharing with them? How does one ensure that worker's productivity is not unfairly exploited?
