I’m a correctional officer. I’m always tired…

70 hours a week isn't uncommon. Overtime is mandatory because the security positions have to be filled. It's not uncommon to get a call 5 minutes before you go home and learn that you're going to be staying for another 8 and 1/2 hours. I'm giving everything to this job and it still feels like it's not enough for the administration. I'm drinking more when I get off work. I've always been in really good shape but even that is starting to slip a little bit. My days off are Tuesday and Wednesday so I'm not getting as much time with my son as I would like. I told myself I was going to go career with this but it's crushing my soul.

I’m tired and my spirits are broken because my manager has a problem with everything I wear. According to her, this skirt is inappropriate length.

I got fired for not feeling well.

As stated in the title I was working at one of the huge pizza chains and had been coming in early and staying late most days. I had complete customer satisfaction and was making less per hour of the other drivers. I spoke with the ASM (assistant store manager) telling her that I am going home I'm not feeling well; reason being I have multiple psychological problems and haven't had my medication for a few days. I told her I needed to go home but she didn't like that I told her and didn't ask although the daytime employees had told her they were going home early and she accepted. After clocking out and heading home I received a call and voicemail stating that I was fired and no need to come back. I've already got another job lined up so I can't apply for unemployment, but it's a serious…

Walked out of my two year job

I worked at a retail store sporting goods store, but I was on the side selling guns. I was passionate about firearms, my coworkers were cool and we formed a genuine bond, and it was my first job when I got home from the navy so I took the low pay and awful hours. I didn’t even get full time, despite working 40 hour weeks for 6 months, until I hit a year. Me and the rest of the firearms team were treated like second class citizens by management, constantly told we needed to be somewhere other than the guns, or that we need to do another departments job. After 2 years and some change, I was the last one left, but I finally got a job offer at a fairly laid back factory for $5 more an hour, and benefits and a consistent schedule. I was determined to put…

Sold for a ten

I work for less than my college degree. The salesmen get more than a dollar for every dime I make. Poverty, its more than noun, it’s a lifestyle. So much for working hard and getting an education- guess my student loans show I bought the lie with a lifetime of hard work and ignorance.

Are “working interviews” normal? (US)

It is in the restaurant industry and it is in the back of the house (the kitchen). Your “interview” is 2 hours long. You are basically working like chopping, getting stuff, preparing orders, etc alongside with people that are already working there. The manager isn’t observing this interview but when you are done, you tell them if you like the position or not. If you like it, you got the job. Is this normal? Edit: I feel like that is a lot of time to give to an interview and providing free labor. Or am I way off?

Has anyone actually had a GOOD retail work experience? Can you share?

I recently started working on the retail side of a larger brand that has its headquarters right above their flagship retail store, where I work. The first month or so was a great honeymoon period, the team I work with is superb and my direct managers are understanding and treat us like humans. The carrot of upward mobility was dangled during the interview, and at first glance appeared to be a real possibility. Now that we're past the honeymoon period, it's “mask off” for big ol' daddy capitalism! I found out the wage I'm being paid is absurdly low compared to some less experienced co-workers. I don't have healthcare coverage despite working 32-36 hours a week. We had a district manager visit for a few days and yank our leashes while understanding none of the nuances we've developed. Basically, same shit different place. Same shit at every retail job eventually.…
