Hello, I know the UK user base here will be smaller but I figured it's worth asking. I used to be with PCS in the days of working civil service but now I am with a private company and as such never bothered to sign up. With the way things are heading and this country's continued regression and unyielding attacks on our rights as workers, now is the time to get involved again. My question though, with who? Unite are the big one, but how the hell can anyone morally pay dues to a group who still support the 'Labour' party? Any input is welcome. I graduated last year, with a useless degree in Business Management (specialised in FnB) and I’m very picky with jobs. I flee at every red flag I see (I worked for less than 2 weeks in a Japanese company that did wage theft, and the supervisor was also so mean so I hated every day of the 2 weeks there. This is in the restaurant industry For context, I’ve been GM at a fast-casual restaurant for the last 5 years. Pretty high volume, retained the majority of my staff since the store’s opening day (11 out of 15 initial crew are still with us). I am currently in Los Angeles, and since my location is a franchise owned by a couple, my pay is pretty maxed out below what’s necessary to even qualify for a studio apartment. I’ve spent the last ~year and a half applying to and interviewing with various restaurants, and have noticed a trend with every single job offer I’ve received; No matter the job title I’ve applied to, they offer the title one or two below that. I want to post the texts between my boss and I, but last time I tried I couldn’t post text on specific days. Here’s what’s up. So I work midnights, my shift is 9:30pm – 6A.M. Two weeks ago I told my boss I got called in for jury duty, in May I told her I got a letter and will be expecting a call I didn’t know when. So this was not out of the blue. I texted her and told her Im done with jury duty and I might need an extra day to get my sleep on track again because I’m tired early now, She texts me back and asks me if I can either come in TONIGHT or use a vacation day because they’re short handed. I work for a big media company that touts itself as progressive, but on paper I don't actually work for the company because I'm classified as an independent contractor, and I have been for over 4 years. During that time, I've been strung along with the dangling carrot of being given actual employment, which would include much higher pay and benefits. I haven't had health insurance in years. I get no paid time off. Have no retirement savings. I've piled up so much debt from trying to make ends meet while relying on this employer for my income. Because of the contractor status, the pay is sporadic, despite being more reliable in the past couple of years than it was earlier on. So as the title says a certain wireless company is withholding my bonus/comission because i got covid and was out and apparently if i didnt work enough hours theyll punish me and just give it to me next month, can they do that? Its weird because i was the top performer with the least amount of time worked weird that theyd punish me for it.
