So I found out yesterday that I’m going to manage a team. I’ve always poo-poo’d the idea of being a useless middle manager that delegates work to subordinates on lower salaries. Maybe I’ve sold out by saying yes, but I’ve said yes in the hope that I might be able to be a boss that shields the team from the politics and BS from management, and make sure they are treated and paid fairly. But I haven’t given much thought into how you go about doing those things at a practical level. Anyone got any advice?

Recording convos
For context this is in Texas. My friends company has a policy in their handbook that they are not allowed to use any type of recording device in meetings. Unsurprisingly, this is the most unprofessional office and should be recorded for multiple reasons. Does state law override team member handbook? Or what happens if you record something?
Apparently I am supposed to complete payroll early due to the coming holiday (which I always had to work anyway). What's even funnier is I got sick and had to take a leave of absence for surgery and whilst recovering, my manager demoted me because he personally didn't like me. He was one of those types of people that brings down everyone around him to make himself look better. That was in 2013 so for 9 years I haven't done payroll for this company I no longer work for! I want to come up with a creative response. They did send a retraction email afterwards that they fucked up. Btw, I was fired after 12 years for a hot urinalysis for weed in a state where it's legal and went home and literally had my second heart attack in 6 months. I was in the hospital for the next couple…

Who else misses the summer breaks?
Disclaimer: My current job is fine, so this is not an “I hate my job” rant. While on my previous job, I couldn't stop complaining (and the misery I endured there was my gateway drug to anti-work thought), my only complaint about my current job is…. well, that it's work, and takes 40 hours a week, like literally any job It's the 1st of September. If this was any year before 2014 (when I was in high school and elementary school), I'd be dreading the return to school. Between 2014 and 2020 (when I was in college), I would have been mildly annoyed by the end of summer break. But after 2020 – with me being a wageslave now – there is literally nothing. Only on the 1st of June, do I feel some resentment about the fact, that just three years ago, I would have celebrated the coming of…
