My second cousin was the fry cook for a locally-owned restaurant so for 2 days out the week, I worked for 3hrs and got paid $66 dollars a week. I spent $40 to $30 on gas every week so it sucked but I had something to put on my resume. Imagine being a foster kid whose foster parents refused to help you out when it came to getting a job. You couldn't name-drop anybody. I live in a rural area and most people get hired based on family relations. If your cousin is trustworthy, then you must be trustworthy basically. God forbid you come from a crack-addicted family cuz no one will trust you to wash their dishes let alone work their register. At my current job, the manager has 2 of her kids on the payroll and one of my coworkers is incompetent but can't be fired cuz his…
Famous Last Words
I recently got a real treat when my abusive boss of six years quit to start a new job. I spent two years of tolerating his narcissistic, manipulative attitude during which time he had told me he was going to be acting as my mentor, but for which I got very little actual mentoring. Still, I was desperate for work and it was a promising opportunity, so I stuck it out. A week into his last two weeks he says, “I'm not going to be able to help you professionally.” Translation: don't ask for a referral. I started waking up to every single instance of abuse I had endured, and it threw me into a tailspin which I finally started to correct on his last day. He turned to shake my hand out the door. Diplomatically I took his and said, “Thanks for the job!” He responded, “Good luck staying…
Does this mean they’re scared?
I made a post last week here where I was offered a 100% remote job at Company B with a 12% increase in salary than my current employer, Company A. I took the advice given here and just talked to my superiors about the opportunity and if they could match it. Company A was operating on a hybrid work schedule that I was not following and after the discussion told me I am “good to just WFH full time” (a plus). They couldn’t guarantee they could match Company B's salary, but might “come close” or “even exceed” it once salary negotiations/raises are given out towards the end of the year (a negative). During the interview process with Company B, I asked on 2 different occasions that this role is WFH indefinitely (and won't switch up 6 months down the road), and I was given a wishy washy answer of “This…
I know this is probably be for r/askhr but I'm asking it here because I don't want or need HRs stained glass experiences. I got a second interview with a uni as a recruiter for students. It included 3 private interviews, 2 group interviews, and a 20 minute presentation. Totaling up to 4.5hrs. they pulled doctors and pharmacists from their jobs and flew and zoomed people in. I'm told it's pretty standard. But this is the first time I've experienced it and don't know this perspective.
