This has been on my mind for a few months and it still bothers me, so I want to ask you fine folks… A few months ago my grandmother passed. It was a Thursday. I told my boss I would take the following day off to grieve and deal with family matters. When I turned in my timesheet, I was told that we did not have “bereavement” days and that I would have to use a “sick” day instead. Fine. whatever. The handbook confirms this. My issue is that the HR lady came to me asking if I could provide a copy of the obituary (I assume to validate that my grandmother actually died). so been working with a frozen storage company 2 years. i just got laid off friday. no explanation til a hour later via email saying due to hurricane damage in ft myers the company had to make cuts. i’m in miami but my company is based in ft myers. this all came to a shock to me cause i’ve put in so much. my position was basically customer service specialist/ warehouse coordinator. my duties were all on the computer however i always did work outside my title such as pick orders, down stack pallets, hand orders to clients. even did everything and ran the business after the supervisor quit. then we moved in a bigger warehouse and i was working in the office alone flooded with extra work cause of the high volume. never complained. actually 2 raises for my hard work. one guy got hired to help me but…
