Otto is a man who does not give a fuck. He's 87 years old. Comes into the office at 10:30 and has a nap at his desk. Goes out for a smoke. Has another nap. Presses a few keys on his keyboard, has a smoke and another nap. Lunchtime. After lunch smoke, nap, smoke, nap and before you know it it's time to call it a day. New people in the company sometimes see him asleep at his desk and get upset or pissed off. These people come and go. They get laid off all the time. But Otto just naps and smokes and still survives. Otto doesn't give a fuck. He fondly remembers punch cards and indoor smoking. He quietly laments the increase in “women engineers” as he takes a drag. He makes six figures but hates it when some of these younger brats ask him if they can…

It's pretty well known that European countries have better labor conditions than the United States. But I've seen it said that the reason behind this was because the soviet union was next door and to prevent communism the labor conditions were made better. In lenins imperialism the highest stage of capitalism he claimed an English men once said that if they don't begin exploiting labor overseas, the workers will revolt. Now I'm told by liberals that the soviet union had horrible working conditions and that all communism is is when the capitalist class is replaced by the government. I took this as liberal propaganda though. I wanted to know if the increased living conditions of Europeans was actually influenced by the communist bloc being at its doorstep. Or if this is just speculation.
New job policy. Is this legal?
Just got a new job at a small company in California. I love working here, i get alot of freedom and they are teaching me an absolute ton. The only thing that really rubbed me the wrong way was the “late clock in” policy. For every 5 minutes an employee is late, the company decreases 15 minutes of time from their pay. Is this legal and if not does anybody know a similar case?
Officially Burnt Out
I woke up today with so much anxiety about work. I am horribly overworked, we had 9 people quit in 1 year. I’m being paid very little for all of the work I’m doing, a job that used to require two people to do. Since there is so much work, things are falling through the cracks and I know due to this I’m not getting a good raise this year, if at all. It feels like I’m being set up for failure. I’ve started looking for new jobs and I do have an interview lined up but they already told me they can’t give me the salary I’m asking for. And the more I look, the more it seems like I’m never going to be making the money my friends and family are making. I just want to quit but I know logically I can’t do it. Im also constantly…
For context I work for a local construction company in the office which, all of the employees are extremely conservative and I hear some of the most brain dead things. This morning I was just drinking my coffee and booting up my computer in my office and I hear my co worker talking to one of his superintendents about the minimum wage and it went a little like this. A will be my co worker and B will be the super. A – “what people don’t understand about economics is the big corporate companies are not going to reduce their profits so raising the minimum wage will only encourage more self checkouts and robots taking these lazy ass people’s jobs.” B – “yeah I can see that” A – “these workers need to stop being so fucking lazy and get REAL jobs instead of flippin burgers because I am tired…
Replies by talking about how the company has a benefits portal to get as much as 5% off your supermarket shop and sends out a link to the government Help for Households website. Yeah thanks mate, I'll forward that on to my mortgage provider and I'm sure they'll take it as payment. He's probably patting himself on the back for a job well done justifying that 6 figure salary.
Not sure if this goes here and certain this will be controversial, but…. We are caught in this con where we must subsidize the gap in bad pay and benefits for these workers because employers have exploited our guilt. So employers get off with more profit and we get stuck. Then when we try and change it, who defends it? Servers like this… Look, I want EVERYONE to be able to make a decent living, part of that is me not having to pay extra to subsidize you making $90/hr when the employer should be paying you $25/hr with full benefits. I need my money as well. Why should I voluntarily throw more away while your employer profits? We have to take a GOOD hard look at how we feel about tipping here. On one hand, the worker MIGHT suffer if we don’t do it, but on the other they…
Hi! Just thought this was absurd as i've been following The Dodo's union fight for a couple of years now. They first ratified their contract in 2018 under Group Nine Media, who was acquired by Vox in 2022. My understanding of the situation is that Vox is not going to raise the Dodo Unit's pay to parity with the other Units (Thrillist, Vox News, etc…), Vox is not covering a pay gap that will occur when transitioning onto Vox's systems, and Vox is not compensating the employee's for any banked PTO time they will lose when moving to Vox's unlimited PTO. Im really surprised this isn't getting more coverage. Am I nuts or is this gross?
