Are posts like this even allowed here? I hope so. So, I've worked my current job for over 8 years. Retail grocery full timer. 48 hours a week 6 days a week. For a long time it wasn't a job I hated…until it was. Slowly over the last 3.5 years our staffing slowly started to dwindle. Covid hit and really decimated us. As Covid became less of concern and as some would say, “As we learn to live with it” we naively thought maybe our staffing issue would improve. It didn't and frustration continued to build. I rode it out longer than most. In my current position I make $19 an hour. Had 3 weeks of vacation, 2 weeks of sick time and 1 week of PTO. Backed by a union. What would all seem like a great gig. I recently started a new union position at a large university medical center. Wow! Coming from a non-union environment, the difference is night and day. The health benefits are cheaper and better. Dental is covered 100% by the employer. They recognize twice as many holidays, and you get paid 2x if you work a holiday. You get OT if you work anything beyond your scheduled shift. I get a free bus pass. 100% employee match on 401(k). And I pay into a pension plan that ensures a will have steady retirement income. And since I work at a university medical center, I can take free classes at the university. They also fight for massive raises every couple…
Good luck!
The GM stated it was due to complaints, customer claims of damage, and a general attitude from me of not caring enough. Wasn’t just me, though. The store is $27,000 in Red after storage delinquencies, Uboxes shipped to the wrong address, and the fact I was hired before the company was financially ready to bring onboard my skill set and pay me the full-time rate. Sadly, I don’t have a glorious exit or an amusing departure story of revenge against the corporate giant. I’m just a cog in the machine, changed before it’s time. I do have a new plan though. Learn to weld. Maybe that will get me enough income… in a year or so.
