Florida-based company tries to fire European protected by European law.

The US company tried to force the employee in the Netherlands to have his webcam on 9 hours a day, which he of course refused. He got fired and sued them. The Dutch court ordered the company paying for the employee’s court costs, back wages, a fine of $50,000, and an order to remove the employee’s non-compete clause. The court ruled that the company needs to pay the employee’s wages, unused vacation days, and a number of other costs as well. Source

Personal Device for Work Use?

Question about tech at work – can my employer ask me to use my personal device for work related tasks? For context it would be digital 3d sculpting of assets I can do on my personal iPad Pro. (The only software I have been provided right now is maya on a PC and it’s not great for organic sculpting)

My work gave me 3 points after they told me they wouldn’t.

I have this cashier job that has a point system. If you get up to 5 points, you will be terminated and never allowed to work at that particular store ever again. You Get: – 1/2 point if you're late to work. – 1 point if you clock in/out 10+ minutes before your shift starts or 10+ minutes after your shift ends (even if your manager won't let you leave your register. Like, we are told to clock out via our phones if we have to but we cannot leave the register without permission) – 1 point if you call-in no show – 2 points if you call-in no show on a holiday – 3 points if you no-call no-show It takes six months for those points to go away. And it's not like they all go away at once but rather individual times. I went to a doctor's appointment…

[Rant] Got let go from my dream job

Rant warning, but a perfect example of how much power employers hold and how little accountability there is for them in Texas, where I live. I work in dentistry, and in dentistry there are corporate offices referred to as DSOs, or Dental Support Organizations. I worked for one of these and was completely overworked and miserable, and I was doing work that I hated. When I actually was able to assist chairside (What my license is for) it was very basic, quick stuff that would let them corral me back up front to deal with upset people all day, every day. Fast forward to July and I found my dream job. I got interested in periodontics and surgery at my previous job and wanted to find an office that did some of that where I would be allowed to assist chairside in more complicated procedures. Imagine my luck when I…

Does anyone else watch those vids of people building clever little houses in the wild, and think “what’s the use, I can’t even afford the land.”

It's like, yes, it is exciting and encouraging that you can do so much with just a machete in the jungle, or with logs in the forest, or with cob. Underground swimming pools! Adorable hobbit houses! Postmodern adobe! Stained glass windows made of recycled bottles, outdoor showers, mud daub pizza ovens. You don't want a McMansion. You'd be so happy with a modest little home. Look, you could even maybe build it yourself with the help of youtube! You watch these vids and it seems so doable, so within reach. Surely you have ample creativity and willingness to learn. For a minute you think, wow I could really do that. But no. Every last square inch of land belongs to somebody. These vids are house porn — the lure of something you can never have.
