I work for a hotel chain in the UK as a room attendant, and they present themselves as a happy, progressive company but the way they work you feels manipulative and exploitative. The work is physically demanding, cleaning jobs always are, but here you have an added time pressure. The software they use calculates your finish time based on how many rooms you have and which types, and they write it on your list. The result is ludicrous and unachievable without cutting lots of corners. To meet the goal you have to clean so fast and for the first few rooms it's possible, but it's not physically sustainable all day. They also have a ridiculously high standard which isn't achievable in the time given, for which we are judged. We are not machines, everyone is different, different ages, fitness levels, neurology, but they expect perfection within a time limit. My…
Month: November 2022
Conned out of a months wages
So for other a month I worked at a gaming cafe in the UK, after interviewing they asked me to start right away with promises of providing a contract for me to sign and everything to be above board. I know silly of me not to hold out and wait for a contract but I needed to pay rent! A month later still no contract and now pay day had arrived and shock and horror, I have not been paid. I chase my boss up and he is too busy to deal with it as he has flown out to Canada for a wedding. I think to myself fair enough I will wait till he gets back. A week passes he arrives back and explains to me he dosnt actually have any money in the business to pay me and never did from the start and if I would continue…
My boss won’t let me enjoy my music.
I (42 non binary) work at a local library and yesterday I brought my speaker to work so I could enjoy some tunes. Only a couple minutes in to my dubstep listening session my boss told me to turn it off immediately. I tried to explain that my job of wiping down bookshelves is very stressful and my music helps me cope, but my boss wasn’t hearing any of it. Honestly I don’t know if I can take being a wage slave much longer.
Skeleton crew on Thanksgiving
Originally, this was for me to get off my chest and seek advice about my sick time (unfortunately no luck with that), but it’s become a general “complain about work” throwaway. Yesterday was Thanksgiving. First of all, all of our managers are scheduled in increments of 4 hours or less. Second of all, we had ten people call out. TEN. I’m stuck with an almost 10 hour shift, no break. I miss my family because I might not have my own family but I’m still relatively young and want to have a moment of peace with my parents. So, ten people call off, then we end up left with 9 employees at most for the entire day, and by the time I got out, we had four people left. Me, another service coworker, a manager, and a single cook. We only had a cook that long because she agreed to…
At uncle's for holiday, he has MSNBC on at all times. Doesn't believe me that there has been a rise of militant labor organizing in the US in recent years.
i was just wondering if this was legal? heavily contemplating quitting but idk if i’m just being a quitter or if i should, not my only reason to quit it’s a pretty hostile work environment too
Be it whether you genuinely don’t feel well or just don’t want a soul crushing day, what would you say to your boss to say you can’t come in?
Hi! I'm Ben, I'm a Software Engineer. For the last couple years I've been having Software Developer jobs in a bunch of companies, and it is INFURIATING how managers, HR and even your own bosses have absolutely no clue about how Software Development works. This is no surprise, usually in Tech Companies, your boss will either be a Comercial/Economics dude or some sort of 'enlightened' entrepeneur. I'm telling you right now, these guys don't know anything about Software Development, not a thing. If you've been paying attention to the latest news about Twitter and Elon Musk you'll notice he fired his top IT guys and gals “they weren't fixing the android app fast enough”, this is the case with so many other companies as well on these last months. I'm telling you, guys like Elon Musk DO NOT know more than a web developer, if he actually did, he wouldn't…
