Anyone ever wonder why stores will have more managers than normal employees sometimes?

I don't understand it. I work as a courtesy clerk at a large chain grocery store. We're understaffed to hell and when I mentioned that it gets too busy for just one courtesy clerk sometimes, I got told by management they couldn't afford to hire another person. I run around the parking lot doing carts, I keep all the restrooms and store floor clean on top of helping customers with what they need entirely by myself. There's about maybe 1-2 people at most per department at a time but for some reason we'll have like 4 managers on staff in the store it makes really little sense to me

Well I took a travel job after four years of ER CT.

So I have worked night shift ER for the last four years. Rarely called in and worked the entire pandemic with an autoimmune disease. At the end of Covid the hospital froze raises and had us work ot understaffed. I put up with it because I am the bread winner and we live paycheck to paycheck. Well they decided to schedule me for my third Christmas in a row and family lives out of town. I finally had enough and applied to a trave position in xray paying four times as much with full benefits. I was hired quickly thanks to having good references and 10 years total medical experience. Welp put in my last day as December 23. I’m free! They tried to convince me to stay but nope I’m seeing my family after missing them the last two years!

Gen Xer here, yes you were lied to

I keep seeing posts about your grandma made .75 an hour and lived in the suburbs, had a new car and a flat screen tv. They are lying or you are lying. My first job paid 4.25 and it was your grand parents running the world. On my 4.25 I had 2 room mates and we could barely afford an apartment in the poor areas. Car? Yeah right, my car was a bmx bike with a rusty chain. You are probably thinking I must of lived in NYC, or some other expensive metro. Nope, I lived in southern GA., one of the cheapest places to live in this country. Because of the cost of living I often found myself homeless, begging for food or taking a trip to PD for shop lifting food. There was never a time in our country where min wage supported a family. You can argue…

has society failed us?

Or have we failed in society? What brings you here? Are you stuck in a min wage job for a decade? Or have you done “what was expected” by going to school and studying hard….but still running hard in the hampster wheel and not going anywhere?

Can’t even find a job with the degree I worked hard for.

I graduated in May with a Bachelor's in Computer Science and have only held one internship so far. However, I have been applying to so many listings, tailoring my resume to each specific job description not to get filtered out, and have been doing side projects and updating my portfolio to show to employers. yet all these entries and junior-level jobs require so many languages and “3-5 years” of experience. If it is considered entry-level why do I need 3-5 years of experience???? I also hold an Airframe and Powerplant license but I enjoy working with data more. It just sucks how back in my parent's times, there were not so many hoops to jump through, yet today companies want the most experienced and qualified person while paying the least they can.

I am virtually unfirable at my grocery store retail job. How do I start milking it?

I feeling a bit froggy. While I do like the nature of my work, it can be relaxing, peaceful, and a hobby of mine, my relationship with management feels like being in an abusive relationship again. Yelling, emotional manipulation, passive-aggressiveness, you know… I honestly should have walked out once I started getting yelled at. I communicated my dissatisfaction with my manager's behavior to her who has since quelled it but with the Christmas season, I expect nothing but shrieking. But here is the rub, they are so desperate for people especially folks who are competent, learn from the pathetic excuse they call training, are expedient at their job, are dependable, and take the abuse of management. I, unfortunately, wield those characteristics and therefore my place of work doesn't deserve me with all the abuse I endure. I feel like I am carrying the whole department on my back. Oh did…

Common responses for managers

It might be useful to create a repository of responses to common requests/demands made by the boss. Here is one to begin. “You need to get someone to cover your shift. >> “I’ve already tried everyone. They may be more likely to respond to you if you want to give it a try.” *edit: I used finding cover as an example. You write a response to anything bosses say.
