How long is an actual “40-hour” workweek?

Commute time is around 10 hours, so this goes up to 50 hours. Chores take 10 hours, so 60 hours. Also, each hour at work seems to be five hours' worth of work.

ED/ER so desperate for staff they call ex-employees

So, my mum works in an emergency department. They are heavily understaffed when it comes to ward clerks. Because of the intense work environment, new employees don’t last and current employees are overworked. My mum has been wanting to resign because she can’t stand the phone calls at odd hours, hoping she can come into work. Well, that wouldn’t stop them calling resigned employees. she is still friends with them and they have have talked about the manager trying to call them even though they don’t work there. Now it doesn’t really matter if my mum resigned or not because she would still get the phone calls. Ex employees are now blocking the numbers because the are sick and tired of the shit.

Here’s how likely the dream of becoming a billionaire worldwide is

So, some very simple maths: There's 2.7k billionaires in the world in 2022, for 8 billion people (we just reached this number in November). In other words, you have 1 chance in 3 million to be a billionaire nowadays. That's a 0,000033% chance to become a billionaire one day. Yet so many people defend them, thinking they might just join them one day, lol.

Got told I should skip break

Without revealing too much info about what I do, I package dry goods for a large company. Had 2 of my tickets take them a good hour each to send me at the start of the day. Then we had a clog higher up the building that slowed me way down for one ticket, causing me to have to take my lunch about 45 mins late. Then quickly the next break comes up. I got told I should skip that break to make up for lost time. A few back and forths about how no one should have to do that, and finally I said, and yes, I'm aware this sounds cringy, “anyone who thinks breaks should be skipped is a slave to the corporate mindset, I am a human, not a robot, and I take my alotted breaks”. Not to mention, I'm diabetic and use breaks to hydrate and…

What constitutes ‘fair’ pay, and should you be paid more for being a ‘key worker’?

I have been thinking about what makes fair a lot lately and keen to get some input from the sub. There’s a lot of ways you can look at pay, and I don’t really know the answer. At a minimum there has to be a liveable basic income, but how do you layer on aspects like supply and demand, criticality of the job (key workers), work conditions, and surplus value of the worker (to lean on Marx)? In the simplest sense it feels like most countries have a minimum wage (that may or may not be liveable) and the rest is largely based on the least that can be offered to fill a role (effectively supply and demand). In the UK we have quite a few sectors striking, in general they have a bigger voice and impact because their services are more relied on – nurses, public’s transport staff, mail…
