I work part-time at a restaurant within a retirement community. I will admit that I don't really like my job. Management sucks and we're severely understaffed, but I stay because I love the seniors and find a lot of personal meaning in brightening their day. My boss (let's call him Trey) is an ass for many reasons, and all of my coworkers hate him. A recent issue that has come up is that we're no longer allowed to drink water during our shift. A shift is about four hours, and because we are so understaffed we are basically speedwalking the entire time. Our uniform consist of long pants and three layers of shirt. And because many older people get cold easily, the thermostat is set really high (85°F some days). So yes, we do need to hydrate. I work Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays. Month: December 2022
Mainly because they hadn't paid me in the 7 weeks that I worked there. Then there was the bullying to get me to buy into the corporate culture of self reliance. “Never ask a simple question directly to the person who knows the answer (even when they've asked if you have any questions) when you could spend 3 hours sifting through old emails to find the answer! Getting a job in 2022…

I haven't been at the job long and have only received positive feedback. I also just took over 2 highly visible projects. Tonight around 6:30 a director scheduled a 15 min call with my whole department for tomorrow morning. I haven't seen any other signs we'd get laid off. If anything I'd assume we have decent security. But, my team is new and a lot of us are brand new to the company. Some just started last week. So if they need to save money it makes sense they'd sack the new people. I'm probably getting laid off, aren't I? I really can't afford to be jobless again.
So I've been on here a lot and I figured I'd share my story from working at a hotel in a small town. Spoilers: it was the worst. It's also fairly long so bare with me. I'm bad at summarizing. I was 19 at the time. I was desperate for work to get out of an abusive situation and every other job in that town was $8/hr or less. I mean my dad was making $12/hr as a bank manager and he had 20 years managing experience and a business degree. So when I saw a nightshift job for $9/hr I was happy to get it! At first I was a diligent little worker. My tasks were cleaning, cooking breakfast, laundry, checking in guests, checking out guests, calling guests, etc. My usual shifts were night or swing but sometimes mornings. The shift schedule went something like this: Morning: 7am-3pm Swing:…
