I Hate Retired People

This is mostly a vent post, i’ve been working as a cashier at my local grocery store. it’s not terrible, it’s unionized (most grocery stores across america are btw) and my boss isn’t terrible either, but i live in an area with lots and lots of old retired people. Yesterday we were super busy, and we only had 2 baggers for the 5 open lanes. This old guy comes through my lane with like 15 2 liters and a whole bunch of other stuff. i get him rung up, he pays, but both my baggers are busy so i start bagging. usually for big orders, people help bag their own order, especially when there’s a super long line behind them, but not this guy. No he stands there watching me bag all his shit. I ask if he wants his 2 liters bagged, and he tells me he wants them…

Not Anti-Work

I’m not anti-work, I’m just exhausted… & a bit terrified. Its been almost 3 months since I’ve been employed. While this has been a much-needed breather, I actually miss some small things about working; small-talk with coworkers, human-interaction, learning stuff, money… But all those things don’t excuse the mistreatment & unrealistic expectations set by a corrupt management. It wears on you, work becomes ‘soul-crushing’, & you’re made to feel inadequate. As some of you can probably tell by now, most of my job experiences have been in retail. I just turned 26. Since I was 20 my goal was to break the threshold of entry-level position, into management. However something crappy always happens to prevent this, or the harassment/work conditions just become to unbearable. Ive even been promised promotions, but usually its just management teasing me to make me work harder. What I learned is promotions in retail are hardly…

I submitted a wage complaint a few weeks ago, and now my former boss is calling me

This happened today. I worked for him over a year ago for 1 week before I got a better job offer and quit. He never paid me, and I have been calling him a few times a month to try to get paid. He picked up a few times and always said he would pay me. Months went by, and he would dodge most of my phone calls. A few weeks ago, I decided to submit a wage complaint, and now he’s called me 3 times today and texted me asking for my SSN. I’m not sure if he’s trying to get false info, but maybe this will be a lesson for him so he doesn’t scam future employees.

The Hypocrisy of Team Buildings

Team buildings and team gatherings with managers and team members should be considered unethical. Pretending to celebrate and have fun with ppl who will be firing you right around the next day is just plain hypocrisy. As a company, introducing itself as “family” should be illegal for the same reason. This artificial event, brings no benefit to anyone and moreover, it allows bias and judgement to install in.

Supervisor becoming peer

A former supervisor of our small office team has been out on extended medical leave since prepandemic but is being slowly remotely transitioned to returning to our team … but as a coworker/peer. It is part time to start and they’ll be evaluated throughout this ADA process. They’ll also have an in office health aide. We on the team all have genuine empathy for what they’ve been through. However, this once powerful person was (rightfully) accused by most of the team of sexual harassment and was subject to internal investigation and in general is a mean, workaholic, difficult, moody, intimidating, chaotic person with strong big boss connections. The specter of their potential in- person return has sent the team into a tailspin. We are a peaceful bunch and have not missed them for 3 years and our fairly new temp supervisor seems fair and on our side. No one wants…

Red flags during job search?

I am a recent graduate (whooo I finally got my bachelor's degree!) and I am looking for an entry level job. I don't have any experience with this process because my past jobs are the type of jobs that hire almost anyone and pay minimum wage. I am very intimidated. Any advice on how to go through this process and red flags to look out for? I'm planning on utilizing my school's career resources but those will only get me so far. Thank you in advance!

awful workplace stories to hopefully make you angry

Quite frankly, I'm sure some of it is illegal, but I've been curious about posting this and seeing the response.  Thankfully I don't work here anymore, and I haven't for over a year. I love my current job. I quit on the spot and always make sure to watch for a few minutes every time I go to the mall, because they're always short staffed and struggling.  For about a month and a half in 2021, I worked at a “nondescript” cookie place in a mall conjoined with a pretzel place. I worked the pretzel side. The GM's kids were majority of the employees, and the favoritism was extremely obvious. At the end of the day, you couldn't leave until all of the cleaned dishes were back on your side (half was the cookie place, half was the pretzel). That was fine, except the manager, or if his kids were…
