Why are we giving the boss a Christmas gift?

He’s not getting us anything. This man owns our store, owns rental property, and his wife is a successful realtor. The majority of his employees including me are living paycheck to paycheck. It’s not a big deal for me because I’m just a college kid but there are some actual adults who work there who need to support themselves. I don’t think it makes sense to give him a gift. He’s a great boss it’s nothing against him he’s super nice and reasonable, he just doesn’t need a gift from us. I don’t have extra money to spend on him. He should be getting us gifts instead.

HR admitted to WFH exceptions for employees with children

So as the title says I received the following text from our HR Director today: “Typically, we permit people home with sick children to work from home, since they, themselves are not sick, but not necessarily when they are sick.” This was in response to my asking if I should WFH today given I have a really bad cold and we've created an obvious pattern of getting one another sick in our office. For further context my other coworker has been permitted to WFH today as her daughter is sick. My question is, is this discriminatory? Is this legal? I've cross-posted this in r/legal but wanted to cover more bases. Can companies establish WFH policies that favor those with children? If this post is not allowed for any reason I apologize for my ignorance. Thank you!

Lying About Bonus

Been following this place for a while now and figured y’all wouldn’t mind me venting as my boss certainly doesn’t care. Accepted a job at the beginning of the year with a salary plus bonus. The salary was fine, but the bonus was a real driving point for me. It’s dependent on your annual review, which for me was fine. I work hard and am generally good at making relationships with those in charge. So I got my annual review and maxed out the 5/5 scale. So full bonus, right? WRONG, I was informed by my boss that no one actually gets their full bonus, unless the CEO himself signs off you’re lucky to get 50% of the expected bonus. And if you get more than your 50%, then it’s coming out of someone else’s bonus. Why in the fuck would you offer a higher target bonus, if it’s impossible…

Are movie directors the same as CEOs?

I do understand the criticism of CEO's as being nothing more than 'delegators', where they just order people to do the actual work, eg; engineers, marketers, accountants. But wouldn't this same logic apply to movie directors as well, as their names suggest, they're literally DIRECTers, and also delegate, to eg; editors, writers, actors. I just feel it would be odd to undermine people like Scorsesse and Spielberg. (At least I wouldn't apply this to directors such as Tarrantino who actually write their movies as well [I believe the writers to be the real stars anyway])

Assignment before pay?

Hi! Throwaway long time lurker but anyways. The other day I was sending out mass applications to go work somewhere else as my current work is wack. In the midst of getting a response, the interview informed me via email that I would have to complete an assessment prior to an interview. I figured cool, I’ll do it and then see how the interview goes. When I review the assessment, it’s a huge blueprint style questionnaire of scenarios of data management and operations. Planning, execution, training, steps to overcome obstacles etc., I wrote back to the interviewer that I was no longer interested since I would not get paid for actual work and this was only during the interview process. Imagine the work I would be asked to do while getting paid for it?!? Did I do the right thing?

Can I just.. quit?

I’ve been working for the same company for just over 15 years. Corporate/executive salary position with decent pay, but it’s draining. I have been completely miserable. And also learned that (without giving away identifying details) they’re not the company & people I thought they were and have no emotional connection there anymore. Some recent changes have made it so I could get by without this job. And any future reentry into the work force would be in a drastically different capacity / field. I have to be in the office in an hour and I’m panicking. Not because of anything in particular, I just don’t want to be f*cking be there – with every fiber of my being. Assuming I have no contract and am in an at will US state, what are the real repercussions if I just say, I’m not coming anymore? No notice, just I’m done. Can…
