After two years of feeling miserable, being demoralized by my micromanaging manager, and being deeply unhappy about the place I live, I decided to quit my corporate job without anything new lined up. Despite people telling me I'm absolutely crazy for what I did: it feels GREAT. Last year, my employer caused me a mental and physical breakdown, I was completely burnt out, all I could do was stay in bed feeling my heart racing and my body sweating. Over the past 6 months I have been a significant time on sick leave, had wonderful restorative holidays far away from home and been on therapy to recover. I wouldn't say I'm there yet, but I definitely feel much better. During this process of recovery, I learned so much about myself and what I value and want in life and my work. That certainly is not an employer that gives its…
Month: April 2023
I’ll start. I recently saw an account manager position that had “managing social media channels” and “other administrative tasks” tacked on after regular account manager duties. The posting ended up sounding like it was for 3 different jobs.
Schedule change to avoid OT pay?
Hi all I work at a hospital laboratory in NYS and I have a question. This past weekend the other night tech who works 3 12s called out each day (we figured he would still work at least 1-2 of his shifts) and as a result I ended up getting called in picking up two shifts sunday and monday night. I work typically tuesday-saturday morning (T,W,Th,F evening) and currently on my tuesday shift, my scheduling manager reworked the schedule so i wouldnt work W,Th but still work T,F (giving me essentially my 40 with ~3 hours of ot) While I know I am at least entitled to called in not on call pay for the S,M shifts I feel like Ive been almost cheated out of some level of OT as my manager put two other people for the W and Th shift despite relaying that Ill still work the…
Work sapping all motivation (rant)
So for some context I'm a casual worker in Australia and work at a medical clinic as reception. I work quite late by our standards or should be, as my shifts end just before midnight after starting around 5 and we do all the menial tasks for the doctors, calling patients, getting results sorting, collecting payments and so on so forth. Obviously the doctors want to leave early as well, noone wants to stay later than required so they'll call patients early, which requires us to call them first to get payment, move in person patients up and the doctors might leave by about 9-9:30. but I'm scheduled on for another 2 hours or so, technically my duties are done once the doctor has left other than closing up or doing paperwork, which might take 20 minutes max if the place is a mess and we're behind. Because of how…
Failures of Recruitment
Not sure if this counts as “off-topic” but wanted to have a discussion. I'm currently a recruiter and I feel like there is some general negativity surrounding what we do. Obviously being in the industry I can see some aspects of why we get a bad reputation. Ghosting candiates Incorrectly advertising jobs Being a pain about salaries/rates Etc What do you reckon are some of the biggest failures of recruiters and how would you solve it?
Kiss ass coworkers and snitches
How does one deal with kiss asses at work? I work at a place that doesn't have many employees, it's independent, but there's two people who just kiss ass and snitch to the boss all the time. The snitching has gotten so bad that I just treat them like the boss. It's as if I have no place to go without someone looking over my shoulder. And there's weird favoritism. It has honestly made me want to quit which sucks because I work only 3 days a week, I make a good amount of money and get paid WEEKLY. But the ass kissing snitching has gotten a hold of me. I'm afraid I'll find a new job and it will just be worse, like all jobs are. I swear I just have really bad luck with finding work I can stick with
I’m in California, my job is giving out quarterly bonuses of either 5% or 10% of gross income for the quarter. 5% = B score, and 10% = A score. Well basically the results came out and everyone is livid because the scoring model is completely ass backwards. There are people who barely do anything that have gotten A’s and the vast majority of employees have received B’s. Needless to say the complaints have reached upper mid management so a supervisor came in and tried to re explain how this scoring model works and how it will make us work harder and be more innovative nd what not but everyone is still pissed because the logic behind some of the people who have gotten A’s is flawed. Anyway to reduce further animosity the supervisor kept emphasizing not to tell each other what grade or bonus we got even though it’s…
Yesterday I made a thread where I criticised how few free time remains after the 40/45 hour work week and that its almost impossible to do much else besides house work and a full time job. Many people then tried to contradict me with claims like:” You have bad time Management.I get up at 5 go to the gym – am home at 6:15 at work at 8 – work until 4:30 – get home by 5:15 – read an entire book – and go to sleep by 11. Totally doable. I cook once a week BULK – thats enough”. Or: ” I dont know what you are talking about. I work two full time jobs and have plenty of time for plenty of things”. People spouted this like some form of accomplishment. They didnt realize that they only manage this at the expense of their health and that every…
