Please stop yelling at medical staff, we are trying our best.

I work as a medical receptionist at a walk in clinic. I always try to be very friendly to everyone, as I understand the fear someone may have while waiting to see a doctor. I also understand how frustrating it is to have to wait for such a long time while you’re ill just to get treatment, so I always make it a point to offer coffee/tea and snacks to people waiting. The clinic is very understaffed. The wait times are almost 2 hours long on a busy day, but we try our best to help everyone efficiently. Every single day I work, my coworkers and I get screamed and/ or threatened by patients regarding appointment costs and wait times. It’s taking such a mental toll on me where I have been getting extremely anxious going in to work. Seriously I would say about 50% of the patients that come…

Scared to go on vacation

I (31m) am going on my first big vacation as an adult. I’m an attorney practicing at a midsize firm. Well this month I am scheduled to go on a 10 day European vacation. It’s been on my calendar and approved for months. Nobody has raised an issue with me going but I just know that when I get back it is going to be an absolute mess. It really sucks that I can’t even enjoy the excitement of the anticipation without also feeling fear of the consequences of going on a vacation. Ah the joys of capitalism. Edit: I just wanted to add that I am very happy at my current firm I think this guilt and fear is more self imposed than anything.

My boss showed his true colors, I showed myself out.

I've been working my ass off in my current department for years. I put my hand up and volunteer to get things done because I'm a clinician and these things need to happen for patients to get the care they need. I'm in a mid-level position, there's one position below me and one above me – then the clinical managers, above them is the department director. For the last 3 years I've been doing more work than the people above me and more than the managers. In addition to my clinical duties, I've been working on 5 different special projects, including helping to manage our patient records program. Last year I applied to a manager position that opened up and thought I had a good chance since I'd been doing so much extra. I believed that I had proven I could do the job after training new hires on the…

The cancer of capitalism

I’m an attorney in the US. About 2 months ago, my husband found out that his cancer had returned aggressively. Lungs, liver, adrenal. About a month ago, a tumor was found in the brain. The docs were going to operate, but further tests showed that it's also in his spinal fluid, which is pretty much game over. That first month, my boss was sort of a jerk. He had a meeting with me to see what my work schedule would be. He was urging me to go part time or take a leave of absence. I had to fight so hard to remain full time. The only way he agreed was when I said my husband planned on continuing to work full time through treatment. What was I supposed to do? Sit and watch him work? We also had a vacation to Disney planned, and he told me that I…

Would you “work” at a job that pays you no money, even if it was something you liked?

Long story short, and to avoid my “boss” getting mad at me, I'm a 15 year old male who decided to help out at a local nature center over the summer. Now, this isn't a normal thing like a pet shelter or something. It's a job where every Wednesday I'd be expected to plan a 15-20 minute activity for kids of literally all ages I mean toddlers to kids older then me after a presentation. However, the problem is that the head of this nature center expects me to be there every Wednesday as if I was working there, but won't pay me anything. I really want to work there because I am interested in a career in a nature field, but getting no money is a big turnoff. Thoughts on what to do? Looking on how to address the topic with her other then “give me a chance and…
