Everyone quit, understandably, you can make $4 an hour more at the local amusement park where your biggest concern is kids puking and you don’t have to worry about someone’s shitty car coming back to bite you, you don’t need tools, you aren’t expected to make sales, clean the shop, do back breaking labor for $1 over minimum wage, I do what I can for these guys but we’re all looking to jump ship, we had 8 people 3 months ago, today it’s 3, and we’re open 76 hours a week before i closed us for weekends
Month: May 2023
I got the strength to quit my 3rd job
It’s not really this “directors” fault. He’s Brand new to the org I have been there for almost 2 years as a cook getting paid dog shit and found out 2 months ago I was making what a starting diet aide was making.. never called out, have always gone above and beyond.. )when I found out how much the other cooks were making I did ask for a pay bump and was told they were not allowed to give raises at this time of year)… now, I don’t even know If they schedule me, or when to come in. ) I was disciplined last week for showing up late when I NEVER knew I was scheduled to come in earlier. It’s been a long time coming, I’m proud for this one. (I’ve always worked 1-7 unless they asked me earlier but my schedule is consistently 1-7 unless I’m told otherwise…
Bafflement
You ever have a boss that just blows you away with some of the choices they make? “If you need coverage for Memorial Day Weekend, go ahead and call people in.” I try to call someone in and the response I get is: “Sorry OP, Boss told me not to come in.” Why tell me to call people in if you already told them not to come in?
Day off cycle
I’m going to try to be vague here. I work for a small company as a barista and I’ve been here for the better part of a year now. I’ve been working here since I was a minor and I’m barely 18 now. I graduated highschool a couple years early so most of my state’s child labor laws don’t/didnt apply to me. I’m just so overworked. Averaging 6-7 day work weeks and making OT before Saturday. I will ask for a day off weeks or months in advance, have them approved, have a coworker call out day of and then I have to come in. It’s not fair. I’m missing things that are important to me because coworker has a migraine or isn’t feeling well. This has happened every time I need ONE single unpaid day off. No, my coworkers shouldn’t have to work sick but no matter how much…
FIRE is killing us
A lot of people here complain about low wages and corporate profiteering, but I don't think that's the entire picture. The economist Michael Hudson pointed out that post world war 2, the US switched from industrial capitalism (making things) to finance capitalism (rent seeking). Nobody really noticed this switcheroo. The US economy is now largely dominated by the FIRE sectors (Finance, insurance, and Real estate). These rent seeking sectors produce nothing of value and leech off the productive sectors of society. A classic example of this is the traditional landlord. This class produces nothing (the residential units being produced by construction workers) but charges an access fee (rent). They leech of people who are working and are more productive than the landlord. Insurance and banking are the same. Hudson rightfully argues that the revenues earned by these parasitic industries should be subtracted from GDP, not added to it. Since wealthy…
finally did it – to hell with it all
overworked and overqualified for my position while also being severely underpaid. got my annual review and was rejected an annual raise since (it's not in the budget) while literally, everyone else got theirs. all of those fucks are redundant and I am literally the only one qualified to do my position since it requires specific education and certifications. a couple of days later got offered another position in a similar field that is waaaay more attuned to me since it is all backend with no people interaction, fully remote, actual market value pay, and is technical work. went to my current place and tried to give them a full month's notice as a professional courtesy and the managers and directors and CEO pulled me into a meeting where they begged me to stay and change my mind. I once again aired my issues that I have been quite open with…
My experience in the US.
I'm Venezuelan, I moved to the US about 8-9 years ago and, last year, I moved back to my country. I honestly couldn't take it anymore. Out of 7 years in the US, the only days off I had were when I quit and I was changing jobs, or when COVID-19 hit and I couldn't find a job for seven months. I don't understand how you guys (Americans) can live there, no days off without worrying about money or worrying about a call from your manager, no (easy/obligatory) paid vacation, no time for yourselves and your family, not worrying about being exploited. It was hell. Of course, this doesn't apply to the oligarchy (yes, you guys have a very clear oligarchy, even if some of you (most likely probably not even following this sub) don't want to see it. After all those years in the US, after grinding and paying…
Boss wrote me up when my pet died
I keep pets and I have exotics. Recently I lost a beloved pet of mine (giant snail) very suddenly. I'd had them from a tiny egg, it was devastating. I wasn't scheduled to work on that day but had been called up and asked to cover a shift that quite literally had just started. I was still in the process of bawling but said I could make it. Due to heavy traffic and roadworks, I took maybe 30-40 minutes, so I was late to cover. This was apparently enough to write me up over, even though I mentioned I'd be late, and explained that my pet had died. I still came in, but it felt like I'd been punished for trying.
Why doesn’t the US general strike?
I see this question a lot from our international friends who actually have worker protections. I see a lot of answers, but I think the big, finite answer is this: geography. Y’all understand how big we are, right? I don’t mean powerful or populus. I just mean BIG. There are acres and acres of open land. Those acres and acres aren’t just physical distance that keeps us from organizing. They’re ideological. Each of our states are their own little countries with their own rules and federal law only intervenes when federal law wants to, or can. Our court system is ridiculously complicated., It's why you can get an abortion every day of the week in California but go to jail for performing one in Texas. Asking us why we don’t strike is a bit like asking why the entirety of the European Union doesn’t strike all at the same time.…
i don’t know what do anymore
i mentally cannot go on in this job, this last two shifts i had to leave within about 3hrs because i just broke down. been looking into remote works (i already work remotely) but nothing pops up and i feel absolutely hopeless. i don’t know what i want from this post, guidance? what you did when you got this low? i don’t want to do anything drastic but its all my head can think of
