In 2021 I had been living as comfortably as I ever had, making $25/hr working from home as a single guy with sub-$1k rent. For the first time in my life, I was not living paycheck-to-paycheck; I actually had money left over for hobbies/savings/etc. When my role was suddenly outsourced, I applied and was approved for state benefits for rent, food, health insurance, as well as unemployment payouts. This allowed me to continue my job search without dipping into my meager savings. I had dozens of interviews over several months without any offers for more than $22/hr. Unsure of how long I would keep getting approved for govt assistance and not wanting to appear as a 'freeloader' to friends and family, I decided to take a $20/hr job that happened to otherwise have great vibes. The low pay – along with a 40min commute by car – means I am…
Month: June 2023
My boss left the state and ghosted me.
I was hired about a month and a half ago. Since our initial interview, I haven’t seen my boss in person. They’d call occasionally to see how I was doing and speak with the person training me. The person who trained me recently left to tend to a family matter and has no intention on returning. I’ve been running the store by myself ever since. On Sunday, I contacted the boss to tell them that our drawer was empty and since it was Sunday, I couldn’t go to a bank to resolve the issue, but that I would on a week day. They never responded and never sent a schedule for this week. The mail man has been stuffing letters under the shop door and it’s obvious to the community that the business has been somewhat abandoned for the past week. Mind you I’ve been training a new employee despite…
Greed is literally killing American people, capitalism has to go.
Your work friends are NOT your friends
I worked at an office for over a year. I made what I thought were some great connections with three people. We had a blast every day at work. We messed around, had inside jokes, played pranks on each other, texted and on the rare occasion hung out together outside work. Six months ago, I got an opportunity for a nearby similar job but for more pay. I would be doing the exact same thing but instead of being in that office, I would simply be next door at one of our contractors. I would still get to see all my work friends every single day, doing the same things I always had, just in a slightly different context. The only difference was who put money in my pocket at the end of the day. Now, they don't appear to be my friends anymore. They don't include me, nor text…
The Northeast US is under an air quality alert and it is unhealthy to be outside and the people who can WFH are being told to go in today and tomorrow (and seemingly the rest of the week). It's evil that a business is telling its employees that they should risk their long term health just to justify a commercial real estate investment
Saw a notification briefly pop up on my phone about a “final chance to sign the new lease at a lower rate” which was confusing because I'm month to month and haven't signed a lease since I moved in. Couldn't find anything in the app the management company uses so I popped into the office. Now I know I've had a good deal here. Rent has increased from $930-1040 for a 2 bedroom in 8 years which is unheard of. I dunno if I fell through the cracks or what but I've counted my blessings where they are. Rent is increasing to around $1250. Sucks but it's been a long time coming. However here is the catch. When the dude at the office pulled up my account he double hand held his head saying “that's what you're paying????”. He's a good dude and I said I knew it was pretty…
Would you stay?
Hello, I am a 25M who is a contracted federal guard. I am a full time college student and am on my last class of my associates and beginning my bachelors. Due to college and VA appointments I was assigned to a night post that paid 25$ an hour. This quickly became not the case. From the beginning I was given different post and much more hours than I signed up for. But the money was good and I was in debt at the time so I dealt with it. Now things have changed, a year later I got my disability approved from the VA and am making good money off of that combined with my housing allowance for school. But my classes are getting harder and several of them will drop you from the course if you miss a single assignment and for the last 3 weeks I have…
