Im a college student. They “dont have the money” to pay me when Fall semester begins. I cant believe this. Ive been with them for a year and a half. This is really the best option for me is working at school because they work around my schedule. It’s hard finding jobs when you don’t have a car or cant do the work study programs. I cried because I feel like im being tossed to the side. Ive been their assistant for so long and it wont be good for them when I’m gon. So pissed.
Month: July 2023
Im new to antiwork and would not classify myself as left leaning like i think the majority here are but i still like browsing this spot cause theres a lot of truth and as a worker i dont like being bullshit to. Im a welder and 4 years ago I left a spot that was horrible. I was only there a month and went because of $4 of a wage increase. My supervisor hated me from the get go cause he thought i was fresh out of school but had been in the field for over a decade (i look young) and I politely said to him I did not need to know the basics of welding, only how to build our stuff. Got yelled at by him for looking at blueprints, other employees fought with him and had screaming matches with each other for how they were teaching me…

Throwaway to try to keep this from coming back to me. I’m an employee at a retail location (soon not to be anymore, 2 weeks is almost up). We got a new store manager at our location within the last 2 months, and since day 1 they have been actively making the store a nightmare for the entire team and it’s infuriating because no one seems to be able to do anything or care to. Now granted, lots of frustration comes down to the fact that policy changes are coming down from corporate at the same time as the new SM’s joining us, so there’s a certain unavoidable amount of frustration that comes from policy changing, rules changing, requirements, etc. having said that, our SM also has 0 experience with the business at all, they were hired from outside the business from somewhere else entirely. So from day 1 they…
Nobody cares. Work harder.
Saw this on a t-shirt today and thought that the guy has really missed the point. It should be “Nobody cares if you work harder.” All I could think was this guy was really deep for capitalism.
WFH Policy
My employer allows some departments to WFH 100% of the time but not mine. We're only allowed WFH 2x per week. I work in an office. I've been bending the rules and not coming in on Fridays because 1) No one is in the office. I'm practically by myself in a big office building. 2) Because it doesn't make a difference if I'm in the office or home, I'm still doing my job. 3) Why should I waste gas money to drive 15 mins to sit in a building by myself? There was a week when my boss and multiple people were out. So naturally I worked from home. I don't think it's a big deal if I don't come in on Fridays and I don't see the need to tell my boss. She gets to WFH any time she wants. I recently found out that HR is going to…
Oh you know, just having awkward interactions for my employment certification. MOHELA hell here we come!
Boss trying to change my schedule.
I work 12 hour shifts for anywhere between 3 to 4 days a week and my colleagues have convinced my boss that everyone wants to move to 8 hour shifts. I don’t. I like having extra time off to spend with my family and friends, being able to plan things in advance as I’ll be off for the whole day, etc. I should also mention I work overnights, that I just started because I switched with someone who hated them, and to go to 8 hour shifts I would have to move to 2nd shift, which when I took this job I said I would not do. Does anyone have any advice for how to tell my boss I don’t want to change my schedule.
The notion of the middle class, as we know it today, started around the late 1940s-mid 1950s. Historians and economists argue that up until the 1930s, a great majority of the US were poor and rural (poor is subjective here. Poor in the sense of how we perceive poor now is a bit different being a poor farmer living off your land in those days. Cant forget Great Depression and Dust Bowl either). Our current middle class model, if we follow this trajectory, started from 1950s and peaked in 1980s, with a decline starting in the 1990s from gradual to extreme (40-50 years total up intil now). Currently, its showing signs of this “experiment” going awry. I'd say the middle class, as we know it, can seize to exist within 20 years if things go the way they are. If so, it would have lasted roughly 75-90 years max (that's…
My grandpa who I grew up with and I am very close to had fallen sick and is dying. I requested an urgent PTO (total PTO requested was still well within my entitlement), as I wanted to go and visit my grandpa. So I texted my manager, and their reply sounded like they were unhappy and something along the line of my request being last minute. How would I be able to know when my grandpa is going to fall sick and planning on dying? It was an urgent request as my grandpa's health condition is dropping really quickly, a few weeks ago he was still in good health. Besides, we were not on any deadlines and I also see other colleagues who would sometimes take urgent PTOs, so it is definitely not something new in the company. I also offered to work remotely from my grandpa's home (my work…
