Don't get me wrong – it's still not as much as is fair or needed for a comfortable life. But I mentally compare it to the US, where even with a Democrat president, senate, and Congress, the minimum wage was STILL left to stagnate…
Month: July 2023
Helloooo, I (25M – UK) was told alongside the rest of my team that our employment was under review and that 1 of us would be made redundant. I received and Email at 5PM last night inviting me into a consultation tomorrow to discuss my redundancy, the other 3 members of my team received emails saying their job is no longer at risk. As i sit here at 11:30AM my manager, HR etc have not said a word about it and everything is business as usual. I work in sales so my incentive to do any actual work has gone through the floor, today is pretty awkward as everyone obviously knows i’m the one being cut but nobody is addressing it, what am i supposed to do all day today? What questions do i need to ask tomorrow? Do i get paid for unused holiday? Will i get the commission…
I feel like it's just to get us in the office more. We're hybrid. I don't want it. Help.
I work at a family owned restaurant. 2 people recently quit so there was has been scheduling issues. This past weekend my manager has two of the cashier/ food runners work 6 hours, take a 2 hour unpaid break then clock back in for 2 hours. He loudly told them that they cannot leave and go home so they just sit around until they can clock back in. He has the cooks do the same thing. I think this is ridiculous. Thoughts?
Slavery is not over, how about Au Pair?
I am an au pair in Europe and I know a lot of people who have experienced much worse than what I went through during this process. I want to do something to help because agencies don't help anything other than taking money from host families. I wanna talk about my own experience. I graduated from university last year and while researching “cultural exchange” programs, I found an au pair. In this program you live with a host family, you have your own room and your own bathroom, you look after your host children 30 hours a week (legal limits are different everywhere) and they give you pocket money(in my country max 340euros), and they pay your food expenses. So you can have a gap year abroad without spending any money, sounds great! Especially if you are in a third world country or somewhere the economy is bad, it is…
Anyone here making $9.50/hr or less?
I feel like i cant be literally the lowest paid person i know of, but it seems like i am at this point. Lots of people on here talk about “low-paying jobs” of ~$15/hr, shit i would be able to actually support my loved ones a little better and not just barely myself if i made that much. Lets complain together! The economy is fucked.
You don't have to read this unless you wanna complain about the job market with me. So here's my story. I hate both jobs. I became a college graduate to get a decent marketing job, but no luck for over a year. Most marketing jobs are scams, pyramid schemes, or gets paid very low at $15 or less. The ones that do pay decently, needs 3-5 years of experience. But I don't have that. This month, I got a call from USPS and some federal contractor who needs an assistant lap dog (do all the dirty paperwork). If the situation comes, I may need to pick between physical pain and mental pain. Which one is worse? Let me know.
Advice for BC, Canada?
My boyfriend had to take a couple of weeks off for a medical issue and while he was gone his boss “overhired and no longer has room for him on the schedule” and keeps saying she “might put him on the schedule in a few weeks” but refuses to fire him. We understand this tactic for what it is but we're just not quite sure what to do about it. He's not planning to quit and give them what they want but has started to seek other employment, unfortunately there aren't many options in my area atm. Is there any recourse or advice anyone can offer me? Thank you.
Always have an answer ready.
Received a counter offer from current company to stay for $11K less than offer from another company. I recently graduated with my master’s degree and applied to several senior roles externally. I accepted an offer for $30K more than my current salary. When I told my manager, they refused to accept my resignation letter and went to go talk their boss and the higher ups to offer a counter offer. I feel conflicted because I love the work I do and my coworkers.
