Finally happened to me

Today I was very unfortunate and was laid off due to shortage of work and downsizing. I wish I listened to my instincts when I smelled a whiff of layoffs coming about a month ago. In terms of being laid off is a letter of layoff necessary or just a gimic? I was offered severance but document stating it was officially a lay off even though my former employer stated during the meeting that it was completely due to business and no fault of my own.

Removed chairs to “boost productivity”

This'll be a bit of a rant because im frustrated. So I work at a factory in NH as an operator, and my work is always time-gated by how fast my machine runs. Today my boss took my chair away from me and when I asked why, he only stated that “this is now a sit-down only job” and refused to elaborate as to why. Now, my job requires me to cut material to within 0.001 inches manually, with a razor. I had argued with him that taking away my chair, and forcing me to try to cut this while towering directly over the part makes the job alot harder because then you can't even see what you're expected to cut. I also notified him that I had already spoken to HR(during on-boarding and the interview)about standing for the entirety of a shift and that it was something to be…

Anyone else feel like their career is being held back by baby boomers?

I work in a field that saw huge downturn in the late 90s/ early 00s, so most people looking for positions or going into training programs changed careers or went back to school. Now we have a large number of older employees (>55) and a smaller amount of younger employees (

Creepy small biz boss

Until a few months ago there was an old guy in my town who owned a walking tours business on some of the forest trails here for tourists, he had run the biz for 20 years. He was about 70 and would find people to work for him as guides, suspicously always women age 20s-30s and also teen girls. My friends sisters daughter is 12 and he approached her with an offer of 40$ cash an hour as a “kids guide” in the school holidays to assist with clients kids. She worked for him for 2 days before quitting. Apparently he kept rubbing her leg when driving with him and told her she had strong legs. On the second day he came up behind her in the forest, held her close and started kissing her hair. He held her like that for over 5 minutes kissing her hair and her…

How to ask my Manager for a raise before i agree to become a permanent employee?

Throwaway for anonymity. I (F23) and my college friend (F26) Work with insurance companies and we are both WFH. We are both healthcare professionals. After graduating we found this job and we have a small team of 6 people who's main jobs/tasks are liaising with medical clinics and Dr's to complete insurance paperwork. I have been a casual employee (A temp, who works full time hours and has been since last year September) and i get paid higher than my friend who is now a permanent. The thing is, when we first began this position i have always been efficient and quick learning with this job since i began. Completing a lot of tasks during the day became what the manager soon started to expect from my other colleagues but they obviously couldn't keep up and my friend said i started to make her look bad because i was calling…

My manager is neither promoting me nor letting me transfer for the promotion

I applied for promotion and I didnt get it, which is fine. But then I applied for transfer to get promoted in a different facility, and almost got it but then my manager rejected my transfer saying he needs the headcount on his site. I don't want to go to work anymore. Its so frustrating. OFC my companys HR is useless so I dont see a point of fighting back.

I know they’ll adjust the shortage eventually, but still…

Drives me batty…. And they'll only adjust it to 8.00 hours. They won't adjust for Monday's extra 8 minutes either And I'm in California, where this kind of thing is frowned upon.

Karen mad about sick days

My team at work is small, a rehab hospital in admin – which tends to not be busy in the summer. One of the many Karen’s I work with has made it her personal mission to make me look bad, as she has seniority I’m worried it’s working – started 2 years before me. Besides the fact that she acts like my boss, corrects me in front of patients & coworkers, makes condescending jokes & comments and complains about me to everyone who will listen. I’ve taken 2 sick days off this last week (on average 1-2 days a month paid .6 wage) with a severe migraine & a coworker/friend has mentioned that Karen is furious, threatening to quit and complaining to our manager. How can I make “nice” while dodging her lectures & condescending comments? It’s been a year of her passive aggressive stupidity & I’m tired – how…
