I’m a middle manager. Trust me, if the average worker would really put their foot down, there would be a better work environment for all of us.

Most of the time I see top management taking decisions that are just not right sometimes and people just kinda accept it because they have to (me included). Most of the time it's because we operate on tiny margins and really tight schedules imposed by the clients (s&p 500 type). Why? Competition. The companies we compete with propose really low prices. How? Low cost labor. Why? People accepting shit jobs in shit conditions. I work with my other middle managers towards optimizing all processes to reduce all costs, but we just really struggle to go any lower than we already have. Most of the time our margins are averaging a tight 7-8%. How can we improve things if we don't even have the money to raise salaries? Most of the turnover is used for maintenance, new tools etc.

Ex-boss is a Narcissist and I’m concerned about what she is capable of.

I need some advice. I left an honest but negative Google review on the business I used to work for. The owner is insane and has and ex-partner that runs a tech company. I'm concerned about this person coming after me because of the review. It was not my real name obviously. But one person I told said I should be worried and that they can sue me. I'm now scared and would like some reassurance. In Canada, but not willing to be more specific. I even restricted the page it's from so you cannot see anything when it is clicked on. (IN doing so i lost access to it) So hoping that clears options for them to dox me. I do think they know where I work now as well. Which is scary. I left the business and was literally afraid of them, and their manipulation was pretty intense…

Partners boss told him he was safe from the layoffs. A week later he’s been made redundant.

So mad that they lied to him and made us feel secure then a week later he’s been laid off. Why do they play stupid games like this.

What is behind the “fake” extended job listings?!

What incentive do companies have to have job listing up over and over agin but not hire anyone? Genuinely interested is there something I can’t see going on? Moving back to the US but here in Finland it is because they have to list the job even if they are promoting from inside the company. They have the position filled already but 100s of people will inevitably waste time applying.

Question: What is actually wrong abour workplaces right now, that wasn’t wrong earlier?

This subreddit raises a lot of instances of poor employee treatment, absurd interview processes, horrible managers and my heart goes out to all those affected unfairly. I'm assuming some of these stories highlight instances that might've also taken place a decade or two back, and some frankly refer to simple frustration from work. My question is – what among all this, according to you, is *really* new to, say, the past couple of years? Thanks!

First Day Working In Special Education Was My Last. TL:DR AT END

I am currently on the road to my bachelors degree in education and for the past year I have been gaining experience working as a substitute and other paraprofessional positions. A few months ago I wanted to work for a local school district, and I preferably wanted to be a Pre-K teacher assistant. My mothers aunt worked at this district already, so I was able to get recommended and pushed through pretty fast. Eventually, I bagged a interview for this position at a elementary school and I was super stoked about it. The school was literally five minutes from my house, there was a potential pay increase, everything looked great. The day of the interview, I meet with the principal and assistant principal; we discuss the position I applied for which was again Pre-K assistant, and then they tell me they do not need that position filled out that school.…

Working unpaid overtime for commission

I am a singular employee of a business sales agent. I get paid an hourly wage and $250 every time we close escrow (only had ab 3 or 4 this year) My boss expects me to take care of client communications (texts, calls, emails) outside of work hours because I get paid commission. Is this legal? For some background: I also regularly put in extra time after my work day ends in the actual office (like staying until 5:30 when my shift ends at 5) because things get busy and pile up but I need to take care of everything before I leave. I keep a meticulous record of all my hours inside the office but I cannot accurately calculate all the time I put in outside the office since it happens on and off. So far the hours I put into the office are covered by commissions since I…

Manager controlling lunch times

I work at a service based company. My client works at US timezone and usually stays up like 2 – 4 am his time. He randomly calls anyone at any time. Now my supposed “TL” from my parent company pinged me to join the meeting when I went to have lunch and it was a random meeting. And he went and posted that in the main group stating I should not be DND and to join immediately. I saw the message like half an hour later messaged on the group itself that I am having lunch. Cannot join right now. This got him so so offended that my manager and his manager (who did not join any meetings since months) joined the daily scrum meeting and yelled at the entire team (and me indirectly). He asked everyone to not have lunch till the client stays online. He said if you…

I start a new job this week and dont know how to feel.

I’ve been unemployed for about a year and a half. (Only working gig jobs for a few months at a time in between) so I’ve reached the point where i kinda need to rejoin the work force. I was offered a position as a manager of a salon and i took the position but i just don’t feel right about it. After i accepted the position, i received an email with an 80 page packet that i am supposed to read in-depth before i even start training. They told me they will quiz me on the packet at training. The position is very sales oriented, which i don’t really care for. I’m not a numbers person and dont feel that sales goals are actually realistic. I’ve always been an operations type guy. I also just don’t like the idea of working 40 hours a week for someone else. (I could…
