Why do people attend meetings outside their scheduled work hours?

I work as an overnight direct care aid in an assisted living facility. There are issues (low pay being chief among them), but one thing I can't understand is why so many of my colleagues come to the facility on days they don't work, during a shift they don't work, for monthly “staff meetings”. They're paid, but it still costs fuel and time to drive across town (or in from out of town) to attend a 30-45m meeting. Most of the time, there's no agenda, even when I ask for one. This month, the agenda is “CEO is coming to talk about being a 'Team of ONE'.” Normalize not going to meetings when they're scheduled outside your working hours. If managers want people physically at the meetings, they can run them as many times as necessary to catch everyone when they're on shift. Otherwise, it can be an email.

New to work, I don’t hate the job but hate everything else around it, is it normal?

I am new to the working word(just graduated) as a developer and I like coding (I do extra on my free time) What I hate the most is the fact that I hate being controlled and being so not flexible,I hate work politics, I hate commuting and I hate meetings.I understand that company trust none but why do they have to control everything I do , we are supposedly in an hybrid format but they control were I log in from , what is the difference if I am in Poland or at the office , as long as I am doing my work(?). Why do I have to work 9-5 if I can get stuff done, should it not matter when and how I work? I am a developer I like to work while I watch Netflix in my house at 8 pm why should I wake up at…

Boss wanted me to come in and I refused – talk of termination

My boss called me the other day asking me to come in on my day off. I refused as I had something to do. He got pissed at me and now I'm hearing talk of being fired for it. I have been at the place for 4 years, never so much as gotten a warning. Always on time and will usually cover if need be. This was the one time I didn't want to come in because of something was planned. Yes, I do work in a right to work state. Is there any legal recourse or anything I can do?

My husband was laid off on a Sunday night via text

My husband works for solar Energy World, they texted him last night at 730pm. Telling him he is laid off. Well he didn't work 18 weeks, so in PA he's not eligible for unemployment. I am so scared we were homeless almost a yeah ago(pandemic plus slumlord and bad credit) and even then I had a job I worked for more than I make now. I am so scared I don't want to go back to living on the street. I seriously don't know if I can do it again. I am thinking about giving away my cats to a shelter and giving up. I have come so far from being homeless and work so hard, and this happened, I really don't understand why I even bother trying at this point. Is it too much to ask to have a job, work hard to have shelter and food? I am…

I over heard my boss talking about firing someone and I think its me

So I think it's me because he was saying something about not wanting to fire someone they just trained, only me and 1 other person recently started working here. And technically I'm still in training after 4months but I'm not really ever trained, I just have to figure it out as I go. Important to note this is a family run business of about 20ppl and most are related or been there for years. I also say my position posted online on Google and geebo, it was posted last week and they're paying $3k less than what I get. Idk they never told me I was doing anything wrong, they all said I was great etc. Literally nobody said anything to me at all. So I'm a bit confused. Idk I said all this bcuz I really don't want to go in today if I'm going to get fired, yea…

Thinking of walking out

I am an RDH and have been working for 10 months. I graduated May 2022. The office I work for has struggled to get me my hours from the very beginning but there were periods of time here and there where my schedule was full and I was promised it would get better. They hired me for Monday to Thursday 8-5. The other hygienist is 8-3. I went in with the intent on being a temp, as their post said, but then changed to wanting me permanent before working officially. Before several assistants were hired recently, I was also allowed to help with sterile laundry etc. to pick up just a little extra time and help where we needed it. I would pick up where things were slacked off on and where other coworkers were leaving early from work. There were a few situations that happened that I felt the…

Working for a living OR living for work? Vol.#1

Gonna try to make this a series. I'm going to comment on a few policies around the world. And you guys choose to comment on it. Please try be civilized to each other. So, the first one is going to be Education & Healthcare. The nation I'm basing this of is a nation which thrived during trying times. Where its neighbouring countries were engulfed in constant war and dictatorships. It's a real nation BTW. The nation decided to stop investing in war, and re-used the money on education and healthcare. As a result from that, population growth and life expectancy sky-rocketed. But more importantly, the economy also sky rocketed as well. Healthcare & Education is kept through a system of Taxes. The former has it's own tax divided in two separate bills: one for immediate medical attention; and the later for saving for future and long-term medical treatment. The education…
