After years of making (HR confirmed) half-market rate for my job, I armed a multi-million dollar financial nuke on the way out

This was originally posted as a reply to u/redzaku0079 in u/GentlyUsedOtter's post, titled ” I really need you to train your replacement right.”. LONG in setting the stage, but worth it. (It's a little choppy because, originally, I hit the reply character count limit and had to butcher it a bit.). The events happened about 10 years ago and I'm now in a great job at a good company making decent Bay Area wages. I quit a job that egregiously took advantage of my situation during a desperate time in my life. It was in an industry I loved but had started fresh out of ~2 years of unemployment, following a severe accident that severed my arm and, ultimately, ended my prior (much loved) career after just 4 years. I was at the new job for about 3 years. I was a fairly fresh college grad that with 4 years…

Two can play at that game

Even though most employers are decent people and many small business owners are struggling, finding a job can be a dog eat dog game. Here are things employers do to screw up with prospective employees: Lie on the job ad on pay offered Call multiple people for one role and do unpaid trials Omit information about required licenses or certifications. Lie about the starting date, the job starts a couple of weeks later. Here are some things I do that madden employers: Apply for multiple jobs Keep applying even when I got confirmation of a shift (probably just an unpaid trial shift) Keep multiple 'first shifts' booked in the case that some of the employers cancel it at the last minute Spend $300 on licenses, worked a couple of day and figured the job is not enough to live on, ask employer for advance pay of couple of days to…

What are some of the best pro union chants, slogans, and signs?

As a youngster I used to be involved in animal rights activism. It was populated by young, creative, and frankly humorous young adults. They had some of the best chants and most amusing and disturbing signs. It was highly effective at getting attention, keeping the protestors engaged, and providing bite sized info. What are some of the best protest and strike signs/slogans/chants you have seen? I thought that the WGA protests would have some really creative signs, but nothing has come across my feed yet. I'd be especially interested in slogans/chants/signs geared towards teacher unions as that is something that is happening locally and could provide support.

No longer allowed to switch shifts or call in sick

I have been working at this company for over year. I want to say about 4 months ago a few coworkers and I made a group chat to ask for shift changes and the like. It’s been pretty active and people ask to switch shifts often. But this is where the issue is coming in, there will be construction going on in my store for the next four months and over the intercom they have started to say that we are no longer allowed to switch shifts or call in sick during this time. And if you do they have said “there will be consequences” but have not elaborated on what these consequences will be. I don’t even know if this is legal or if they’re allowed to do this. I know in the past that management have been complaining that people are switching shifts too often and they are…

“Rage” Quit For the First Time

This happened back in late March but I’m just now ready to talk about it. I was newly employed as a Hospice Social Worker last summer. I love doing social work. I started in July but by early August I got Covid for a third time. To paint the picture, I had Covid three times and mono in less than two years. When I got it August I never recovered. I began to have tremendous health issues such as diastolic heart failure, terrible brain fog, extreme exhaustion, lightheadedness, insomnia, nausea, and terrible pain. I lost 28 pounds in 7 weeks. Regardless, I was still dragging my ass to work as much as I could. Most days. My boss was a nightmare. She was new too and obviously not able to handle stress. I spent months begging for time off to attend medical appointments. In her defense I was using a…

Boss upset because I used FMLA

I’ve been working at this healthcare facility in a supervisor role for about 3 years now. I work with a veteran crew who has been working together for over 15 years. Due to high supervisor turnover, my boss has taught the crew how to do supervisor work (but they can’t be supervisors without a license). Bossman has been in his position close to 30 years. He’s very experienced and was once part of the Board of Directors until company went private. Bossman has at least one other full time job in with same job title (he’s also Bossman at his other location) and as such he has plenty of meetings, sometimes attending those meetings remotely at our location. Due to his schedule always being full, Boss assigns one specific individual, Richard, to be “his eyes and ears”. Richard pretends to be nice but once you turn your back he will…

Rage applying is now a thing

I saw this online and couldnt believe it. https://www.wsj.com/articles/you-hate-your-job-rage-applying-probably-isnt-the-answer-e9fd58ba An article from wallstreet journal stating that rage applying is the reason people aren't getting jobs. How can HR find out through a job application someone's mental state in relation to their current employer. The fact this is even a thing speaks volumes about the job market, how we are socialised to accept shit working conditions. Also add the fact that the job market is so shit right now that I guarantee a lot of people are sending applications in mass and they can't really explain WHY they are applying other than 'I need a job to survive so I am not homeless and don't starve' Fuck this.
