This is a rant more so than anything. So I just got a second job at a large retail store that provides me with enough hours to finally make ends meet. After my first pay check, I finally paid off a fine and my car! But the boss at my first job (gas station) doesn’t seem too happy. He was encouraging about getting another job and also provided a good reference. But suddenly last week, he got upset. He was said “will you still come in if we need a shift covered?” and I said “No probably not.” I have a part time contract of 10 hours and have been working there for over a year. I have never work more than 15 hours a week (i’m a full time student too). He seemed pissed that I suddenly was not at his beck and call, he said “we expect you…

Unlimited vacation time
I am looking for some genuine feedback from people that work at companies that offer unlimited vacation time. I've noticed a lot of companies are now offering this and label it as a benefit. Part of me feels like an unlimited vacation policy is actually a scam to guilt you into working more or being afraid to take time off. Personally, I would much rather have a set amount of days so that I don't have to worry about that sort of thing. If you are one of those people that are allowed to take unlimited vacation, how long have you worked at your company and how much vacation do you take per year?
What was your “I quit” moment?
Been a long time lurker and thought this could be interesting. I'll share mine first. I was working for a hotel that had an on sight resteraunt. I worked in front of house as a waiter/barman and later I also worked in the kitchen on the kids meals. The place wasn't well run, shift leaders dating the staff, people constantly disappeared to go smoke for up to 30 minutes, I'd get spoke down to for “not covering enough” while they did this. This is just for context. So anyway I had a holiday booked and cleared but unfortunately the kitchen manager apparently did not get this note. So there I am enjoying my holiday and I get text “where are you, you were supposed to be here at 9am!” (It was no more than 9.05 BTW). I tell them I'm on holiday and it was cleared and where they should…
This project has been dragging on since March and the department we’re working with has been…less than helpful and actively obstructive while also demanding we get the project finished. Last week, they relayed vital info that made the project make /so much more sense/ in such a cohesive way but hadn’t been noted on ANY of the information provided, nor passed along in previous meetings by the PM. They set a deadline for tomorrow, but don’t worry, they’re also sending more vital information at an indeterminable time which will require ANOTHER revised project (because of course the project from hell requires fixing someone’s past overlook/mistake from before I even started here). There’s a big disconnect with the department understanding what we do, while they just want to move the project on to the next step quickly (but not efficiently!) For my industry, education & experience, and current point in life…
Survey Retaliation?
I apologize for the length of my post and any errors in advance. Im really stressed right now and have a lot to get out… I've been working for a huge insurance company for a few years now and up until now, it had always been a pleasant experience. Within the last 4 months, we got a new manager and a new contract and I swear this dude has no idea wtf he's doing and has completely fucked up the account. Our client isn't happy with how things are being handled and we are drowning complaints and backed up work. Since the beginning, there has been no proper communication as well as literal misinformation given to us and our client. There had been a lot of micromanagement going on to the point where if you were late by 1-2 minutes it was a write up, we were being given multiple…
I work for a small construction company in the Midwest of USA. Small town builder, but we service basically 75 miles from our home shop. I have worked here nearly 3 years and have climbed my way from low man @ 18/hr to being just under lead contractor role(a whole ass different story) @ 21/hr. Nearly a decade of experience. Last week, for the first time at all this year, I was late to work. Granted, by 2 minutes only, but I get the concept and honestly support the “0 tolerance late policy” because I also agree that being punctual is important. I am typically a 5 mins early employee, but my babysitter in the next town over was running a few minutes behind. I wasn’t pressed on it that day, nor did anyone say anything to me about it. Owner and HR were both standing outside with my coworkers…
Boss wrote me up 3 times in one day
Context: I cut meat at a supermarket I was having a perfectly pleasant day when my manager pulled me into the office with his assistant. They proceeded to lay out their grievances with my work over the past few months. One was legitimate, I'll take fault in that, but the others were simple things like which time-clock I punch in for the day on, or not staying after my assigned time to leave to sweep a cooler floor. After they ganked me verbally, my manager then spun around in his chair and pulled up 3 separate write-ups. When I asked why 3, he said “I've been on vacation. Had to make up for lost time”. -One for being asked too many times to wear a beard net (legitimate) -One for grinding too much of a meat that was on sale, even though I was told to make sure we had…
Easiest ‘No’ I’ve ever given.
A really simple thing but made me smile. I recently gave my notice after recognising that the job isn't worth it and they're asking too much for too little pay. HR just got in touch insisting that I have to attend a leaving interview and they've scheduled it for my day off. I couldn't respond with NO fast enough. Utterly delusional.
It is no surprise to anyone in Europe that the USA is an absolute cesspool of corporate greed over human rights and dignity when it comes to anything related to work. You guys have to take a stand and not get mistreated like this anymore. Your misplaced pride for your country and lack of personal respect needs to change. You have to fight for your rights and for the future of your children. Be the change you want to see happen.
