Recently joined a private school. After signing the contract, orientation and first week Director held a meeting and announced teachers weren't allowed to be friends, make groups or meet outside the school. I thought it was ridiculous and how would they even enforce that. Summer break, no students are coming to school. Teachers are preparing material for the rest of the term. We decided to sit together during lunch, it was a regular half an hour lunch, we moved the desks in one of the classrooms to make a long table, switched the AC on in the room (avoided turning on multiple ACs by sitting together) and everyone shared food. Immediately after lunch there's a message on the WhatsApp group with a picture of us taken from a surveillance camera (there are cameras in every classroom to monitor the classes during sessions). The message was something along the lines of,…
Month: July 2023
Like most people here in the US I had to work Monday July 3rd but had the 4th off. When we came back yesterday on the 5th we were all informed that an incident occured on Monday and because of that the company has decided to hire secuirity. Now as people do, rumors have been circulating the building and I've heard three different things so far. First is that this person just threatened to come back and shoot the person he had an argument with. Then I heard the person threatened to shoot up the whole building, and finally that they threatened to come back with a bomb. We asked out boss for more information so we know who to watch out for in the parking lot and just so we know what's actually going on. My boss's response was that what we've heard as rumors are probably true but…
Quit on the spot or give notice?
To be clear: I am not quitting my job. I will wait to be fired. Some insight: the culture of my workplace has grown to be toxic within the last 6-8 months with various employees being targeted (myself included) with micromanagement & write ups. 3 co-workers recently had a discussion on each others process of quitting a toxic job. I was surprised to learn that all 3 said they would quit on the spot without any thought, if the atmosphere became too much to handle. This blows my mind because I could never do that. Not because I value the relationship with the company and want to leave on good terms. Heck no. But because as a single person, I cannot allow myself to be reckless with my livelihood. I can’t jeopardize my financial responsibilities by just up and quitting. I have no family, friends, partner to cover me. I…
I just started a job a couple of weeks ago at a small coffee shop that just opened up in my town. I assumed I would make minimum wage which I was fine with (I’m 22 so it would be £10.18). I just got given my contract to sign (really late, might I add). It says I’m earning £9.50 per hour. I’m about to text my boss asking why my pay is so low but I’m not sure of the right way to word it? I know I should have clarified my wage before starting but I really didn’t think they’d be going under minimum wage because surely that’s illegal. It’s also a really small business and there’s only two employees which is why I’m worried about possibly getting on the wrong side of my boss.
I was just let go yesterday (7/5) and was given my terms of release. I have 60 days to sign so I can get my severance and whatnot. Before I sign that, can I apply for unemployment? This is my first time being fired ever. Thanks in advance. I’m super bummed!
I work in a large corporation that is well known and am often told how lucky I am to work there. That often comes with the idea that I have to be perfect at my job and can’t make any mistakes for the fear of being seen as stupid or incapable. Recently I’m trying to move away from that mindset since I recognize how unhealthy it is. Ultimately, work is just work to me. I don’t feel the need to rise through the ranks like my coworkers do, or show how excited I am about my job because I’m not excited about working. A job is just a way to make money for me. But I cannot let go of the anxiety and stress. Whenever I have a meeting with my director or with external clients/stakeholders I get incredibly stressed and it ruins my day. I don’t know how I…
https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2023/07/05/tipping-culture-is-out-of-control-even-some-businesses-agree.html Not once was it mentioned in the article that restaurants/businesses have long used tipping to avoid paying better wages. Not once was it mentioned in the article that these businesses WILL start providing better wages. Their solution, without pushback from the article writer, is: we'll get rid of the tipping feature to make customers happy and hopefully things will just work out for our employees. Can't wait to see the entire system to collapse and watch business owners piss and shit themselves when the working class realizes that they literally have nothing else to lose by just saying fuck it. Their wages can't cover even basic necessities anymore.
i have to eat
Found a intern position in my field, amazing opportunity with a pretty big radio station. They’d like me to host shows, run social media, and record/edit commercials. All for free. I’m tempted to say yes because the experience, but how can i afford rent? How can i look for a paying position if all my free time goes to these free loaders? He brags about his far reach, his nice boat, his many houses, and yet can’t afford to pay his employees? Feeling hopeless.
Why do companies do this?
I am applying for jobs, and I am pissed off that companies are asking this stuff. What is the point? If it won't affect hiring, why even ask then? I get that maybe they want to be considerate of trans/non binary people, but why ask about sexual orientation? What are they gonna do, send me a pride flag as a welcome gift and celebrate pride month instead of my b-day? Or do they wanna have sex with me?
