I have heard many employees get abused in certain industries…like retail maybe. What industries are they treated better?

calling off and being asked why
i called off of work today, for a few reasons. i’ve been very overworked and tired, along with having a second job that i travel about 3 hours for on the weekends. i have a really good team and my manger is nice too, but he asked me why i’m calling off. isn’t it california working law 101 you aren’t allowed to ask? on top of that, the guilt is a lot. i know i could be replaced in a second if i died, and that mental health days are a thing.. but the feeling of letting people down weighs on me a lot.
That is, I told him not to schedule me starting August 1st. He's livid, but I really don't care. He requires our availability for the next several months in advance, but very often only posts the schedule for the next day the night (or sometimes morning!) before. It's outside the industries required by law in my state to have predictive scheduling, so I've just kind of had to deal with it. I work in education, so this was just a summer job anyway. I was misled during the interview process about how many hours I would be working, and I've been stressed by the unpredictable, last-minute schedules. I just want to enjoy August before I go back to my regular job in a month. I know he's upset, but I don't understand how he thinks he can underpay educated employees (this is a franchise for a nationwide tutoring company which…
My boyfriend worked at a national furniture chain store for a out 6 months. He quit after they continually pressured him from hourly + commission to strictly commission. He put in his two weeks notice on June 27. He worked through the July 1 and was scheduled next on July 4 but had to call off. He was then asked if he wanted to be on the next week's schedule (which started the next day but wasn't done yet), he said he didn't care. They didn't put him on the schedule. Fast forward to this week. He goes to pick up his June commissions check and they don't have it. Apparently the manager who told him he was not scheduling him instead labelled him as abandoning the job or something, which gives them cause to not pay his commission. Apparently that manager quit later that same week. Other managers were…
Texas. Shithole state. Can’t afford to leave sadly. Our state labor laws are so ass backwards it’s not even funny. It’s never beneficial for the employee, EVER. It’s almost like skirting around the law here and other similar states from what I understand has become a culture in and of itself. Every time an employer skirts around federal and state law, it’s always the worst bullshit things. My last straw has to do with my classification as an exempt vs. non exempt employee. I won’t go into details since I’m fighting this out and don’t want to ruin any chances I have. I had an argument with my employer because I’m working 95 long ass hour weeks and being told we aren’t working enough. We are salaried exempt from OT. In my field it’s apparently “legal” to classify these employees as “exempt” due to a certain state guideline on job…
Just got fired after 2 weeks
Hi, I work as an IT consultant a few days a month for a particular firm and I'm having trouble dealing with the IT director/CIO who is the person I take orders from. This IT director has taken over from somebody else who quit the job a few months back. I'm also taking over from my colleague who has worked under this IT director for about 3.5 years a few days a month as well so now I'm taking over his work as my colleague will be focussed on other customers while I run the day to day operational stuff for this customer. Right now I already have a few days worth of experience in this firm, not knowing everything yet but getting there. To be honest, the place is a total shitshow when it comes to organization : 1 IT director/CIO, no IT manager, no system engineer, no internal…
Supply chain
Is honestly soul sucking and I wish I could get out of this network. No job has called back no matter how many applications I send out on multiple different websites.
