GM Severance taxed at 37%
Many people took the voluntary severance package that GM offered this year, many as a way to retire early and most others to get away from the culture driven company. The unfortunate issue with it all is that everyone was told that the salary lump sum would be taxed based on our W2s. One problem, it wasn’t. Payroll decided to assume that everyone receiving it was a multimillionaire by calculating their yearly wage allocation with the lump sum x 24 for the 24 pay periods in a year. This then caused all of the the severance takers to be in the highest tax bracket of 37%. After all taxes out most people only are receiving 50% now while the government is getting a 0% interest loan from us. GM promised that you could take your salary and live off of it up to a year for those that had 12+…
I have worked at this bar for just under a year now (10 months). In that time, credit card processing fees have never been deducted from my tips. When I started, there was no employee handbook, no set schedule, and no onboarding forms or paperwork was signed besides a W-4 and an I-9. Frankly, the owners of this bar are pretty hands off. They have almost no idea what's going on on a day to day, don't understand how to operate their own bar, and I'd say I see them in person maybe once a month. They just expect me to kind of run the whole show. On my most recent paycheck, there was a new deduction listed on my pay stub for credit card processing fees. I know in Texas, it's legal (or at least not expressly illegal) for the employer to take the fees they paid for credit…

Am I being screwed over??
I currently work for a upvc and ali manufacturer in the UK, won't give out much more specifics in case I'm identified. I currently work as one of the sales estimators but I cover a lot for people in different departments which is why I think I'm being screwed over. I was recently offered a chance to train on a new role involving processing orders, this was confirmed later with my direct boss and the head boss, with the idea that if the training doesn't work out then they'll need to hire externally. Since then, as we've been short staffed and I've busy with my own workload I've not had much training on this new job, I then went on holiday leave. When i was off, the new job role was since put on a job site. What could this mean? Is it just an admin thing where they have…
Cheap or cheap?
Boss won’t buy coffee filters, so my manager started making coffee with paper towels. Points for creativity I geuss. 🤮
Why do boomers enjoy being exploited?
Well, I've just lost my (shitty) job. Pay was lousy, nobody explained anything to me (which led to me only being able to do “trained monkey” tasks because the other tasks would have required that I know more about the product (in that case lubricants for vehicles and machinery and car parts!) and our customers (so who gets discounts etc.) because that company was too stupid to simply enter this into the customer database!), the hours were long (43.75 hours per week) and our bosses (two brothers!) are typical boomers (ok: One is a real boomer, the older of the two brothers and the other is Gen-X, but behaves like a boomer because that's how he was raised!), so for them working extra hours and coming in on saturday because they simply hired to few people is ok (note: I never did, I refuse to be taken advantage of like…
Being made to work off the clock
I live in Massachusetts for a small retail shop where the cashiers earn pool tips. Calculating and distributing the tips used to be handled by a manager every Sunday, but a recent rule was put into place stating that the hourly cashiers must calculate and record everyone’s tips off the clock instead—either during break, before open, or after close. Does anyone know if this is legal or is it wage theft? Thanks!
