Manufacturing shop of around 30 people. All those folks would have to make AT LEAST $23/hr to equal the CEOs pay($1.4M/yr). No fucking way we are paying that or we wouldn't be struggling so hard to find/keep employees… I did the math on it after getting pissed how closely we are trying to watch the lowest paid employees. “Their efficiency is down!” Cool, maybe we've hit the point of diminishing returns and all those folks are stretched too thin??? Nah STFU, and just tighten the screws further! Like fire one person and we could literally DOUBLE THE WORKFORCE. But then again why should anyone be surprised? This is the same company that bragged about spending several million dollars of fucking stock buybacks, yet won't invest in new machines to keep the core business ABLE TO FUNCTION. Guess who also has compensation as stock…not the shop floor employees! We put together…
Month: July 2023
Nothing to do, can’t go home.
I work in the Transportation office of a public school district. School starts up again in two and a half weeks. Every request for a bus we have received so for has already been processed, student added to bus. A few requests trickle in every day and they only take a few minutes to process. I literally came to work today to… Log some hours on the clock with very little work to do. There are only two other people here with me, one is a translator and the other is a driver trainer. On Fridays we operate with a skeleton crew but this is ridiculous. We have access to everything we need to do our jobs at home but we have to stay at the office because someone checks the cameras to make sure we stay. One of us has a two hour commute.
My heavy anti work manifesto
This isn't even a manifesto, it's maybe a warning or something I don't know. I'm in my fifties now. I've worked IT my whole life, mainly support but also software analyst, network admin, etc. I for the last 10 years have made less than I made 20 years ago, and that's without inflation adjustment or anything. My jobs have been steadily more responsibility, learning, and stress my entire career. One of the reasons why I've made less than I did 20 years ago is because at some point I had a choice between becoming a deep dive expert in some Dev type field, continuing in support, or becoming a head wacker. By head wacker I mean becoming a manager who's main job is to fire people and rehire them for less than before. I was a single dad so I chose to stay in support. At this point I find…
Changing jobs advice
Need some advice on changing jobs. I’m gonna be starting a new job but the problem is the new job is only a 6-12 month term and there’s no guarantee I will be hired on full time after this, but it’s possible. Ideally, I’d like to go on an unpaid leave of absence with my current job instead of quit, so that way I’ll still have a job if I’m only at the new job for 6-12 months. Would this be possible, do you think? And how would I go about approaching by current employer with this? If I tell them “I ’m starting a new job but still keep me as an employee on unpaid leave” that might not go over too well. Any advice on what to do here? If I ask for an unpaid leave, I’m sure they’re gonna ask the reason why. Should I make up…
one thing that I learned in the workplace is to never get too comfortable with your co workers. No matter how nice and cool they are with you, keep in mind they are NOT your friends. Being too comfortable will lead you to become complacent and next thing you know your manager will noticed this and sooner or later you'll end up getting fired like I have.
I lasted a month
I lasted a month . I just started a new job in an industry I’ve been in for about 5 years now . It’s a brand new facility with owners have zero experience in this field . When I went for the interview it felt more like I was interviewing them . It well though and I left thinking this would be a nice opportunity. Wishing my second I was asked to cover two callouts which I took up on the opportunity. Stuff happens , life happens , I get it . I’ve been a manager in this industry more than once I know how staffing can be . Fast forward to yesterday . One coworker texted me two hours before her shift asking for coverage . I couldn’t do it this time . Fast forward again about 8 hours later . Another coworker asking for coverage for today .…
It's translated from Dutch to be more understanding for you. And on mobile From now on we have to fear every customer so they don't get us fired and treat the store as our “child” it's a cheap IKEA clone, not a high end store and not even drinkable water. Hello all! company redacted will change a lot of things in the coming weeks/months. You have often heard the word “mystery shopping”, although “customer experience” is actually more correct. In addition to the external company that (will) make a number of visits, company redacted itself also makes a number of visits. You have all heard the story of location redacted insert:(coworkers getting fired without proof just before we get our permanent contract) but know that visitors have already been here. They don't (always) make themselves known, but you will hear it afterwards. EVERY customer that ENTERS is therefore a potential…
Job role deterioration
I've been working at this company for almost two years now. After my training of around 3 months, I used to be assigned on projects which I had to manage from scratch design to dispatch which was very good in the sense of learning. But recently(since last 2 months) I've been told that due to workforce crunch in another factory(different country) of my company, I will be doing the drawings for their projects(drawings only) remotely working from my factory. I am really not happy working because it is just drawings and drawings day in and day out. None of the other colleagues speak to me since I am not involved in anything relating to the work done in my factory(research and development, testing, project management, new projects, new initiatives etc), so they don't really have to approach me. I have been told by boss that i will be the only resource…
Basically, the article title is “if you're a young worker you shouldn't look for smart working jobs”. The article is published on the main italian financial newspaper
I'm a long time lurker but first time poster. So my 19 year old son is working his first job this summer as a Carpenter's Helper at a company that builds decks. (WA state). He started in June and has done just fine. He's learned a lot of carpentry and uses the nail gun to place boards, etc. He is very high-functioning autistic. He will sometimes misunderstand spoken explanations and may forget things, but otherwise he is functional. One of the “leads” in the field has been problematic from the beginning. (The other 2 leads are fine.) Today at lunch, this “lead” told my son in front of everyone that he was an NPC. I am older Gen-X, so I admit that I don't fully understand. However, his twin sister was FURIOUS when he told her. It is a very small company with the 3 leads, 2 helpers, and the…
