Downtown Portland task force co-chair balks at making workers come back to office, even as mayor calls it a priority

Imagine a mayor being so out of touch with the reality of the world today that he thinks the solution to reviving downtown is to get big companies to force their employees back into the office.

Warned by boss for leaving work early– should I snitch on coworkers who also leave early to make sure she enforces the rules she sets and make sure she does his job?

For background: I'm a college professor and my boss's (and school's) rules pertaining to being on-campus are excessive. I take seriously my job and never shirk from being present for my students in my face-to-face classes and my required copious amount “office” hours. The issue I have is with the online classes and the required campus hours. As it relates to my online students– I don't need to be at work: I can do my online classes from anywhere with Wifi. And as for campus hours to be at the beck and call of management? I would say management needs us for an average of 1 hour per week, which is far short of the 10 hours per week the school requires of us. In the past, I have left work early because of fatigue associated with my medical conditions (anxiety and depression) and the reality that I don't really…

What is the point of earning PTO if you’re not even allowed to use it

I'm so fed up right now. I literally only asked for one week off, and I have over 100 hours of PTO and have not asked for PTO since working here. I never thought this would be an issue since I work at a pretty large hospital system and ER, and I feel like that's the whole point of those who are on call or picking up shifts. We're shortstaffed most days, missing one person wont really cause that much of a change. I know this happened with at least two other coworkers as well, even though we just had another coworker come back from two weeks PTO. So why even give us PTO if we can't even use it?? Why dangle all this time in front of us then deny it as soon as we try? I love my job, but I need to prioritize my family. I feel…

Can my employer really just hand over all my personal information to Paylocity? Then force me to use it?

They have my name, social security number, birthdate, banking information, phone, and email address. They didn’t ask me they just did it and now are forcing it on us. Edit; I am not under any contract and I live in Iowa.

If/when did you realize your boss was a moron?

For me, working as a software dev, it was when my boss recommending we use a search engine to improve the performance of our OLTP application/system (The application didn't even have any search functionality, I shit you not). I pushed back against this, telling him using a search engine made no sense for our use case, but rather we should follow traditional scalability and performance tuning approaches for read heavy OLTP Systems/Relational Databases (read replicas, horizontal partitioning, query tuning, etc..). His response was none of what I said was right, commenting that there was no literature on the topic (even though there are hundreds of system design books, articles, and websites on PRECISELY this topic). The boss/company ignored me and spent a year having two principle engineers try to implement their search engine approach. It failed miserably, and after having wasted hundreds of thousands of dollars on the project, they…

Reaction I got from “HR” when our coworker started screaming and harassing everyone on the worksite (they’re deleting the messages too)

This has been a reoccurring thing whenever the guy is asked to do his job, he begins screaming at people and insulting them personally, waving his arms around and makes empty threats, our company sits and wonders why no one works here very long. I finally bring it up during one of his outbursts and this what I get.

Is my last manager dominating me?

My job needs current registration and practicing certificate which needs to be renewed every 3 years. Because since I left my last full-time job I haven't found another full-time job, the only suitable person to endorse the renewal of my practicing certificate is my last manager. I texted her and she replied and provided me with the necessary information about her to fill out the renewal application form. We also had a little chat after that. The endorse email is in her inbox since 9am Wednesday and she just need to click and confirm it then my application could continue. But until now Thursday she still hasn't confirmed it for me. I sent another text this evening asking when it will be completed and got no reply. How shall I deal with such situation professionally, so I wouldn't have the unpleasant and uncomfortable feeling like I am being dominated by…

Share location with my employer??

I am a hospice social worker for a really small Home Health & Hospice company in Utah. I recently made a career change and have only been employed by said company for 5 weeks. Last week, my boss pulled all of the “field staff” (about 5 of us) into a last minute meeting and let us know that we all needed to download an app that we would use to clock in and out (I am a full-time, salaried employee per my contract) and that would also be used to track our mileage from patient to patient. She also mentioned she “wouldn’t be obsessively checking our location”. I downloaded the app, but immediately turned off the “share location” settings. Every day since, she’s been sending us reminders to clock in and I have not yet done so. The day after this was introduced, I met with her privately and let…

Fired For a Mental Breakdown

I worked as the Entertainment Manager at a casino for nearly twenty years. My daughter was two years old when I started working there and now she's 21. I met her mother when I was 19 and we had been together ever since. 27 years together. She had bi-polar disorder and covid threw her for a loop. I was furloughed for six months when covid hit because we couldn't do concerts. When I went back to work my wife became very mentally ill. She became violent. My daughter had to call the police once when my wife attacked me for trying to get her help. She ended up intentionally eating a bottle of pain killers and died in spring of 2022. My daughter and I have had a hard time dealing with the loss and the trauma we experienced. I became closed off at work and would close my door…
