Non Exempt Salaried – half OT?

Hi hi! I'm in Michigan. I am a full time, wfh, non exempt, salaried employee. Up until a couple weeks ago, my team and I never had to manage or record our hours (never clocked in/out or noted any OT). For at least 1.5 years, we've been getting paid our respective salaries (40 hours) no matter if we take long lunches, break for therapy/dr appts, leave early, etc. It was made clear that these instances are flexible as long as our work for the week has been completed/in a good standing or we make up any “lost time” another way, our pay never took a cut or an increase. Pro of this: everything was real flexible. Con: we all worked a LOT of OT this year (2023) ….all unpaid, but we just took it as inevitable occupational hazard in our busy line of work. We work late …and to the…

I really need help with motivation and concentration

So this year I switched jobs and got a significant salary increase. I was hired to do one thing but ended up doing another, and due to budget issues we haven’t been able to do what I was meant to do. Also as much as I try to make an effort to get along with the team, they don’t share info with me and have made accomplishing what I need to do really difficult. I try to remind myself that there’s life outside of work but the truth is I feel really demotivated with work, I really struggle with getting stuff done and focusing. I find myself slowly but surely “shutting down” and the thought of having to do all this for the rest of my life makes it even harder. Any tips? Have you felt like this? How did you overcome this?

Absent business owners really p*ss me off

So I fix computers for a living. I recently went out to a small tile shop. From what I could gather they sell tiles to contractors or something. I don't know the details. They're having issues with all their computers. So I arrive and everything is at least 10 years old. Everything is running Windows XP, Vista, or 7 and big surprise, it's all falling apart. The computers are so slow that it's making it impossible for the employees to do their jobs. I'm walking in blind here. I never met the owner but I'm dealing with the manager, who seems to be a reasonable guy. I quote all new systems, getting everything moved onto the cloud and all working together, new email system, etc. Quote comes to about $10,000. The manager says it sounds good but he has to talk to the owner so he goes into the other…

Prone to burnout or just in the wrong field?

Looking for advice or insight on how to handle what I'm now seeing is a pattern of wanting to leave jobs after ~1yr. A bit of background – I finished a higher degree in 2019 and started my first job in that field Jan of 2020. I lasted a year before my mental health was too bad for me to keep it up. I took a month off to go home, see family, and help my sister with her first baby. Then I went back to doing service industry/kitchen work, which I've done off and on since I was 15 and something I generally enjoy. After about 6 months of that, I was feeling better mentally, but was dipping into my savings to pay rent because we were living in a very high cost of living area. Sooooo, I went back to my field, but in consulting. That shit SUCKED…

Ready to walk out for not getting paid the commissions for my sales.

As the title suggests I work in sales, just started back in April. Since then I've written just over $100,000 in total volume and haven't seen a penny in commission yet. The way the company works is 28 days after a sales down payment in finalized you're supposed to get the commission. However we allow people to basically split they're down payment up to 4 months of payments. Meaning 80% of my business still haven't finalized the down payments, so I'm just getting nothing. On top of that, the ones that have finished, canceled their purchases so even if I get the commission, they take that out of whatever next commission I recieve. Ex; I make $1000 on a sale. Then they cancel. My next sale I make $1500 on commission. Well since the last one canceled that $1500 is now only $500 because I had to “pay the company…

I’m in orientation right now. Our HR rep is asking us all to log in to personal emails on their laptops with their Wifi.

I'm not really sure about this. I have passwords and a ton of info saved in my Gmail. This company is demanding we all use their laptops to log in to our personal emails to complete orientation. The HR rep says it's so she can send “onboarding information”. The class is running slow so far so I was able to delete emails with personal information such as banking and my SSN but I feel really weird about this. Can any IT people or someone with a tech background tell me if this is safe? Thanks.

NPR has lost their mind…

“A loyal and reliable coworker can help you vent or think things through. If you need more help, a supervisor might be the best person to talk to, given they may be informed about resources that could help with mental health.”
