Lied to about work hours.

I started my new job on Monday. Very excepted because I have been unemployed for two months. During my interview I was told me when I had my days off, I would be off. One day I would be on call. That was fine with me. Not working a Monday-Friday job was ok. On Friday I get an email from the manager saying that there is confusion about the schedule. He says anytime you are off you are expected to come in within three hours of being called to come in. Anytime you are away three hours from our location you must take vacation. This caught me by total surprise. I have worked a job like this and would never do it again. I explained my other job I had and said I had no interest in working a schedule like that again. They were like noo it’s nothing like…

Had Work in the Wrong Circumstance

Is it wrong for me to be upset about this?

So I work in hospitality (housekeeping at a hotel to be precise) and we’re open basically all year except in winter; we’re only open 3 days of the week. So that means we’re open for basically all holidays. Today, a coworker asked one of our bosses about having New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day off. After their convo, I asked the same manager if it was far out enough to ask to have Christmas Eve and Christmas Day off (which it is). She told me I probably wouldn’t have those days off because of other people who have it off/scheduling. I also asked about thanksgiving as well, but I’m not really upset about having to work that day since I’m not fond of extended family. My coworker (who originally brought up the topic) then proceeded to say that the people who don’t have kids should have to work those…

“Floor Tech.” Companies come up with all kinds of creative ways for job titles instead of creative ways to pay you more money and provide you better benefits.

I usually work about 43 hours a week and I don’t get paid any overtime or get any benefits (plus some other stuff)

So I’m a retail supervisor at one of the largest Zoos in the world. Recently my department was bought out my a huge merchandising company that runs a bunch of other Zoos, but ours is by far the biggest they’ve ever worked with. When they bought us out I was promoted from an associate to a supervisor which is basically just an associate who has to fill out extra paper work. Everyone also got a three dollar pay raise including associates which was nice. When I was hired I never got formally trained. I just shadowed one of my coworkers for about half a day (she didn’t really know anything either because of all the new policies our parent company introduced) and then for the second half of the day I was told to watch the main gift shop by myself because they just didn’t schedule a supervisor to be…

Almost got fired for ONLY being 2 minutes early

I work at an auto manufacturing factory that makes a very very popular off-road SUV shaped like a box as a “supplemental employee” even though I work 60 hours a week sometimes and have been there 3 years. Today I was wrote up, suspended, and told I could have been fired because it is the second time I have swiped in at the gate at 528 am when we start at 530 am and told there was no way I made it to my team on time ( I did ) and I was extra so I had no spot to be in and just stood around for the first 10 minutes. If you miss a day, are “late” even -2 minutes, or call off 3 times within a year span you are instantly fired with no recourse despite me being part of the UAW Union and being an amazing…

Husbands boss *makes* salaried people work 8.5 hours a day minimum and watches to see who’s in office when.

It’s not the hours, it’s the micromanaging. I work fully remote and my entire company operates on trust. My husband works in a place where the management literally applauses the ‘last one in office’ and they have the archaic mindset that ‘hours worked’ equates to value added. I’m frustrated because this is mostly due to a few bad workers who should be put on PIPs; but instead, everyone get punished and treated like children, and there is no freedom or flexibility. It’s a tough market right now for job hunting, so we aren’t sure quitting is the way to go. Thoughts? Suggestions? As a spouse I’m just frustrated that my husband is made to be in office 8-530 every day – I’d just be grateful for him to work the classic 9-5 at this point. It just feels like they’re robbing us of the limited time we have together to…

The ole switcharoo

Applied for an “Event Manager” position at a charity company. Salary description said $40-$50K starting. “Great” i think “ive been doing high profile events for the last 10 years, easy.” First interview was a group zoom. A little weird but Not totally unheard of. 2nd interview I was told the dress is “business professional”. I just moved so most of my nicer close were in storage. Not a big deal, went to ross. And got what i needed. I get to their office at 8:30am dressed smart, resume in hand all that jazz. Interviewer tells me “we dont do event galas or red carpet events anymore” the proceeds to show me a pay scale of $500-$600 per week “with bonuses for every person you get to sign up and donate” and how over 6 months you can work your way up to a “managment” position. Making a whopping 1k per…

I feel very done with traditional 9-5 jobs…

Are there any jobs that are actually just chill? Like can I go work for 6 hrs and leave feeling like I have energy to do other things? Is that a thing? I am genuinely asking (living in Canada). I was thinking of starting a small business but that feels like it would be way too much work just to be able to set my own schedule, plus it could still be horribly stressful if the clients suck, like they often do. I don’t give a shit about money any more, I worked as a software dev for 7 years after 5 of university, I made lots of money, enough to take a break and I realized that doing that work is killing me, if you told me I had to do that job till retirement I would off myself on the spot. I am 30, I don’t have kids,…

Work boomers

I'm sick of boomers at work expecting max efficiency for jobs that pay little above minimum wage. Why should I give a shit??? The only good thing about my job is that it offers wfh but they have been trying to shove us back into cubicles (and funnily as a result there's been more drama and arguments lately). So sick and tired of this never-ending circus.
