Long time reader, first time posting. In the US- I just saw my job posted on Indeed. For almost $15000 more than I currently make. My boss, last Monday told me that he needed me and that he couldn't do it (my department or job) without me. He also has slated me to manage 4 more departments in different states, with me moving to a different state as well. I admit I have been looking elsewhere because new state isn't exactly friendly to anyone except cis rich White males, but I hadn't shut the idea down. I was also told that my location would absolutely be closing. Yet there it is, with the address of the corporate office, where I work, my job “just posted” on indeed. I'm trying to remain calm and not be angry. Change is good and sometimes one needs a helping hend to get out of…

TL:DR Promotion with a pay reduction?
For context: I (31m) started working for Company A in June of ‘21 doing construction work for them and getting anywhere from 50 to 75 hours or more a week. Pay was decent but the overtime definitely carried the job. After a few months work started winding down so I was transferred to another department and my overtime went away. 40 hour work week but it was Mon-Thur so it wasn’t a big deal, cut to July of las year, same thing, work is winding down so I go to another department. Now my work week is 40 hours but from Mon-Fri so it is basically another pay cut but they dress it up nice and I like the place, my coworkers and the work isn’t bad and I’m learning a ton plus at this time I’ve been there a month and year so I get a raise. Finally another…
We should unionize in Tech
These layoffs, mismanagement of the company, executives having cushions and not facing consequences, and throwing caution to the wind regarding labor laws, are just infuriating. Why can't tech unionize and let the companies follow terms? This helps – Benefits will be standardized – Layoffs won't happen as much without a lot of scrutiny and discussion – Companies will treat people better. 9-5 came from wanting sane working hours. You want 60 – 80 hours, pay overtime. – Salary bands will be standardized – none of the bs (above market below market bs). You know what you will get at each level with an actual range. I can already see people typing that you won't get the high salary that people command today. Why not? A union would be able to negotiate the right salary for you pertaining to the actual company. A Meta employee makes more money for Meta than…
Move on or wait it out?
New job since last may and not feeling it… I started a course on my own in March this year because I wanted to go in payrolling. Soon after my SO was finishing up his contract at this company and they happened to need someone there. I got the job and started in may, since then it's been a weird gew months for me. The work is great and I'm still learning so I try to just do my best. This is also what was discussed during the hiring process. I'm very new and still learning the basics. Lately I have been getting very conflicting signals from colleagues. My HR colleagues make me feel very inept and constantly ask how I like it and if I'm not sure about stuff just to ask. This sounds good but the reality is that it's making me feel very insecure and sometimes even…
This story involves me, and three levels of management above me. My immediate supervisor, let’s call him “manager A”, is nice to my team but he’s scared shit of offending his boss, “manager B”. Anyone on the team asking for something that he thinks might piss off manager B, he’d say something like: “Are you crazy? This will get both you and me into trouble with manager B. Forget about it!” Manager B is a real piece of work. Less than 6 months on the job, he’s pissing people off left and right. A big time micro manager who also power trips non-stop. Making changes that doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things just so he can leave his mark, I guess. He took away 4×10 from everyone who had it, with no reasons and no warning. This disrupted people’s lives, like having to re-arrange daycare, etc. One person…
Feeling a bit numb and lost. I’ve only been working there for a little over a year, but it was the first job I’ve had that I actually looked forward to going to. My work was hybrid and I could decide when I wanted to go into the office, but I got along well with my coworkers and worked well with them so I liked being in the office. We’d have hangouts occasionally after work as well. And then my boss was the best I’ve had. She would check in on me occasionally – not my work but me personally – but other than that she never micromanaged and only cared I was getting my shit done, not how I did it. And she was just a really cool and smart person. I know it was a decision that came down from the owner because my boss was blindsided as…
Unethical corporate ladder climbing
Forgive me if this isn’t the correct sub to post this in, but I thought y’all would be the right audience to entertain my idea. I work in social media management but find climbing up the ladder and making a livable wage impossible. I can’t break 50k, nor can I land a job with benefits. I’m good at what I do and I know I can succeed if given the opportunity but my resume seems to get tossed out left and right. I’ve got a unique full name, so much so that only 3 people in the U.S share it. Another person that shares my name is a marketing director in another state across the country. I contemplate the possibility of reaching out to his former university in an attempt to get transcripts to at least, on paper, have a relevant degree. (Easier said than done, they probably require sensitive…
