I’ve just realized the true beauty of Randall’s character from the Clerks movies. On the surface, he doesn’t give a fuck beyond doing the bare minimum at work. He does however care very deeply…about his coworkers. He talks and jokes around with EVERYONE. Even the weird religious kid Elias from Clerks II, while he is in fact ripping on him most of the time, he is still giving him lots of attention and asks questions about him, and genuinely seems curious about the answers. He also never hesitates to include him in the fun and conversations with others. And that’s not even touching on his deep devotion to Dante Hicks. I want to be like Randall. Do an adequate job, nothing more, but be free to absolutely joke around and shoot the shit with my coworkers. And defend them against asshole customers. Because work fucking sucks and we’re all in…
Month: August 2023
A bit of context my boss has been trying for the last three months to find any reason to fire me. He was saying I don't shower, I dont comply with the dress code when he didn't inform me about it. ie: Not wearing jewelry, masks, necklaces, sunglasses or make up at work. But, not holding people he likes to the same standards. It's unfortunate to say that working at this job feels like there's a huge target on my back. Because, of my gender none conformity. I'm mab nonebinary and make up is how I feel confident and he hates that I'm wearing it when his other employees wear heavy heavy make up. Not to mention that during December he threatened us with a hammer if we slack off stating “you better work or I'll hit you with this hammer.” (Boss). That is threatening employees he has yet to…
My toxic work environment has just worn me down. Any piece of solution or feedback I give to my organization always lands me in the conversation of “You can either be a team player or you can transition to another job outside of our org but please give us 6 months notice so we have enough time to find someone for your role” They really couldn't fire me because I was the only one running my program. They also can't afford unemployment. Well, I received a job offer yesterday and I will be making 20k more a year than I currently make at my organization. My plan is to give a one days notice after having my boss and the executive team tell me to basically quit and to give them a couple months notice…. yeah, Im good. The icing on the cake is that two others in my team…
Having to get Wage and Hour involved.
I'm so tired of companies 'forgetting' to pay their employees. Wage and Hour is barely helpful in these matters. Contacted W/H after three months of not receiving a paycheck from Red Robin for working a shift at minimum wage. In my state, the company is allowed to keep the money if they successfully avoid you for a year. There's no getting the money back. This is the third time in my life that I've not received pay for work done. I finally got a response from W/H saying to go pick up my check. “Where?” I asked. “Do I go to the state W/H office or go to Red Robin?” They replied “It's at Red Robin.” So I go there. Had to get three separate managers before the GM came up; who was the only one who knew anything. First thing I said was “I need my check.” I had…
Confused on why I lost my job yesterday
I just started my job 3 weeks ago as a sales rep. The company is a franchise and based in Florida, but had taken over a franchisees location due to lack if effort from him. The sales Mgr came in last week for training and things went great. Very cool guy, he was impressed with me and even stated I'll do a great job. In order for me to get this position I had to pass a background check in order to do business with a major partnered retailer, no issues. I worked solo the whole week, sold 2 out of 5 appointments. Last night I get a call from sales Mgr stating that corporate has decided to go a different direction in my area. Sales Mgr was confused and had no explanation from corporate. I know they were in works on getting a new franchisee, maybe they did and…
Realizing I’ll Never Buy a House
Sorry for the rant but I’m frustrated and tired. I (33m) worked my ass off to change careers mid Covid. From web developer/marketer to commercial appraiser. Both my wife and i were born and raised in SoCal. She’s a licensed therapist and I’m an appraiser and we will probably never buy a home here. How do I know that? I was talking to my coworker who was born the same day as me in the same area. He owns a house, has a new Mach-e, two young children, sounds like he has it all figured out. I asked what he was doing differently to allow him to buy his house 4-5 years ago. His answer… He was stabbed in the legs by kitchen knives poking out a box while working at his previous employer UPS. Got a major settlement, bought a house, changed careers, had kids, bought a new car.…
I work a blue collar mechanical job. To keep things vague, becoming fully licensed to perform work on my own requires over 2 years of training that culminates in oral and practical testing from a federal entity. I’m a year~ into my on the job training. Anyway, the shop I work for is a smaller facility so I understand that working here will never be as well financially compensated as you can be working at one of the big companies in our field who’s technicians are unionized (they cap out over $65/hr). That said, I was able to sneak a peek at my supervisors paystub recently and he’s making less than 70k a year. This man has been doing what we do for 20 years and is the right hand man to our company’s owner. Seeing this made me more curious and I was able to look at a few…
Union rep works in bad faith
I work for a fortune 500 hundred company known for their magic. You know the one, well they decided to close my department to swap to a third part company instead, probably because it’s cheaper but the problem is that our union representative has been useless in allowing us to relocate within the company. To give context, i have worked with the company for 9 years and started in merchandise, which is apart of the same union i am under now with floral which is closing. They gave us options to say our preferred locations for going to merchandise and I didn’t want to return to my starting position and told them so. So have many others in my department told them they didn’t want specific areas. The union representative proceeded to place not just one but ALL of us in the locations we didn’t want and caused several of…
