I feel like I am being taken advantage of. I started a contract position this past spring. 90 Day contract, 520 Hours with the opportunity for a full time position at the end of the contract. Cool, awesome, no problem. Fast forward to the end of my contract, everything is quite peachy. I have taken initiative and been noticed and eventually offered a higher paying position set to start 2 weeks after the offer letter was signed. I signed the same day. I felt like it would be a good fit, and it seemed like they felt the same. So here is my issue, 6 weeks ago I signed the paperwork. I have worked an entire month past the “start date”. Technically I am still a temporary employee, paid by the contractor. I am not eligible for health benefits for 30 days after my “start date”, vacation doesn't kick in…
Month: August 2023
I’ve been at this company for almost two years. It is my first job in the industry, I did what we do on a smaller scale in my free time as a hobby and was confident I could climb up in the industry quickly. Well, almost two years later I am 2nd in command and have had 2 interviews for the manager position. Our last manager was fired over two months ago, the assistant manager and I have been handling all the tasks of the manager for over two months now, with no compensation. The assistant is a good buddy of mine, and we are now competing with one another for the manager position. Lately he’s been ruffling some feathers trying to stand his ground and not be exploited more than we have been and he’s talking himself out of the promotion and people keep telling me it may be…
Hazardous Work Environments
Hi, everyone. Sorry if this is not the community to post this in. I think this is actually my first Reddit post 🙂 So, please delete if this is the wrong place. I work for a major retailer. My corporate building/warehouse (yes, where many of your orders are packaged and shipped. Yes, I have received customer complaints about roaches being INSIDE their products) has a roach and cricket infestation on all 3 floors, water-damaged ceilings that are rotting out, sewage gas leaks in some bathrooms, toilets that hang half-off the walls, broken toilets and sinks, and I honestly wouldn't be surprised if there were a bunch of mold spores. We have no windows. My department's floor reeks of a fishy smell almost every day (though my suspicion is this smell originates from certain “shower-phobic” coworkers). When these issues are reported to management and maintenance, they're brushed off, nothing gets fixed.…
Quitting job for a ‘client’
I am currently working as a financial regulator. It is relatively common for the regulated companies to poach people in my line of work for the compliance roles as there is a strong demand for this role in the jurisdiction I am based in. Often it leads to quite a bump in compensation too. However, it's worth mentioning that there is a 3 month covenant for employees to not work for the regulated entities after quitting. I got the associate position here straight after finishing masters programme at university and been working here for about half a year now. I realise that I still have to gain a lot of experience before considering a move but I just wanted to hear advice from someone more experienced than me about how to build my career going forward – if I want to eventually leave for one of the regulated companies, how…
For funsies
I pissed off my boss today. I walked into my office and he was messing with my phone trying to transfer it back, well it's been the same *73 for about 40 years, but he couldn't figure it out. He was already irritated. I asked him about a work truck outside that I sorta blocked in with my car. He snapped at me for being to loud, there were customers here!!! He shushed me and was very rude. I casually go take my lunch to the back, and 'accidentally' kicked the broom leaning against the wall. You should have heard this old metal broom bounce off the tile floor. Oh man it was great. I just said 'oops'. He was fuming. It's the little things at work that put a smirk on my clumsy face
McDonalds wants its workers to be robots
Need help with ideas for a reference…
Hi everyone, I'm hoping this is okay to post here since I am really trying to help a friend who's struggling to find work in this messed up environment we're in. They have been looking for months and have finally heard back from a place they really want. They asked me to be a reference to them. I worked with this person, they are amazing to have as a colleague. The only feedback i might have is that they are very introverted and it can come across as not-confident in their work. But they are very capable and intelligent. This reference is a form and asks for “areas of improvement.” Now i've always been told you never say anything bad. This almost cost me a job once because one of my references gave them one or two “areas for improvement.” Well apparently management took that as “they are not enough…
Team morale at work has been at an all time low. Leadership just keep piling more and more on us with no extra pay, and the expectation that “we should just do it”. It’s not in our job description, and we’re not even given proper training so when things go wrong, we get reprimanded for it even though we were not properly trained in the first place. Anyways, I decided to take one for the team and write an email to leadership about all the challenges we’ve been having in hopes that they’ll see this isn’t ok and work with us I CC’d my entire team on the email because they all feel the same but nobody wanted to say anything out of fear of retaliation. I had finally had enough though. Instead of acknowledging my email, it got completely ignored for three whole weeks until I finally asked my…
I feel super uncomfortable after a meeting I had with my manager today. She told me there were grumblings conversations about “reimagining my role” back in June/July from a specialist to a coordinator title. Titles are whatever but in my company titles are related to pay structure. So going from specialist to coordinator would result in a demotion. She said her direct manager (director of operations at the company) told her this and my manager immediately shut it down and pointed out ways my role was specialized. Her DM immediately backed off and said “Oh you’re right I guess I never thought about that” I told my manager I felt super uncomfortable that these initial negative conversations were happening without my knowledge and she told me not to worry because she put her foot down. I feel uncomfortable because: No talk of demotion was ever expressed to me. I have…
“So, I originally joined Kwik Trip thinking that I would be working overnights. They kept “training” me and then made the decision that I “wasn't ready” and decided to keep me on dayside. Overnight people get 20/hr. Dayside gets 17. Then, because I have to walk to work and while it's close but not THAT close. Sometimes I'm late, not by very much unless I oversleep which working 8 hour shifts will do that. So that, coupled with the Dread of working in a quite Conservative workplace where you LITERALLY have to fake being nice is VERY tiring for someone like me with an ASD” – my friend Budgeting is hard and the money runs out at around the same speed as without budgeting and they have a lot of other things going on interpersonally so considerate, specific, help is appreciated
