Companies have no loyalty

I work for a larger bank on the east coast. Recently, without any notice to the people, it was announced in a meeting that their positions were eliminated. In front of everyone, they found out their jobs did not exist effective immediately. One woman has worked for this place for 25 years! Make sure your side gigs are solid folks!

Employer changing the pay rate after I completed the work

My company laid people off and demoted me because they didn’t make 10% more profit

I'm like super depressed about being demoted and seeing a friend amongst those laid off. The company basically said that they wanted to make 40% profit so far this year but only made 30% so they decided to lay people off. They demoted me and when combined with personal issues and my existing depression I've been super depressed. Thinking about checking myself in to the psych ward because I've been thinking about unaliving myself a bunch lately. I really hate how corporations can just ruin lives because they love money so much.

DOL Hearing

I was recently terminated from my job for excessive absences, most of which I had doctor notes for due to frequent colds and my subsequent asthma flare-ups. I was able to obtain unemployment benefits a month ago, however I just received a notice from DOL that my previous employer is now contesting my eligibility for benefits. Included with the letter from my previous employer is an affidavit from my former supervisor claiming that I was given a warning for excessive call outs – which is false as I had never had any warning and I have tons of text messages where he’s always been super friendly and just said to feel better. Their other argument is that I signed the employee handbook which of course states that I can be fired for any reason. I have access to all my doctor visit summaries and return to work notes. Additionally, I…

Boss will rate my performance on what I do OUTSIDE work hours

I have an upcoming performance review. Part involves grading staff on how often we step outside the responsibilities of our positions, including working outside hours. Pay raises have been decided by these reviews. Call me a crybaby, but it seems wrong to grade performance based on things I did outside my normal responsibilities and hours. Since my industry is federally regulated (Canada, telecommunications) — did anybody have any federal legal or regulatory references I could cite, to exclude this section from my review?

Is this a normal experience?

I am not sure if this is normal or not, almost every place I’ve worked at my entire life, with a couple exceptions, have been very bad experiences. Ranging from sexual harassment, racism, exclusionary treatment, verbal abuse, etc. Whenever I express that to people, they say it is normal. But recently my close friend has said it’s really crazy how that keeps happening to me. I think I am prone to this sort of treatment. I currently have a great job that I work from home, but next week there is a company wide meeting and picnic. I’m getting really anxious and stressed at the thought of going in. I know it is irrational. Does everyone have bad experiences with every work place? Should I just suck it up and go? Any insight, suggestions, etc would be super helpful. Thank you!

How do I (29M) review my annual review?

For context: I’ve (29M) worked at my company for over 2 1/2 years. Started in the warehouse as a Parcel Coordinator and after 1 1/2 years earned a lateral promotion to MRO Buyer in Maintenance. I was happy to make the move since it meant a slight pay increase and a better job. Two weeks into my onboarding, my senior buyer quits. I go from having the chance to learn and familiarize myself, to being the person who has to do everything. We don’t have a planner, so most of our supervisors just dictate the things that I need to buy and I try figure it out from there. Almost every maintenance tech or electrician is pretty short with me, since stuff is missing and I don’t know part numbers. We don’t have a fully rolled out parts system, since no one has put entered our parts lists into the…

That sneaky bugger…

So normally when I come to work early, I sit in my car and walk into the building 2-5 minutes early. On the RARE occasion I walk in earlier than that, I sit on my phone at my desk with the quip “I'm not on the clock yet”. This week my dad (I'm staying with family, not by choice) took time off and asked to use my car to get some lumber to fix the back step. I said sure and he drove me to work and will pick me up. I was here 10 minutes early. So me and a co-worker started to shoot the shit cause his work is done and I'm early, and 6 minutes away my start time, 2IC (2nd in command) walks in and realizes im there early. He immediately started telling me to get him files and stuff. Co-worker mentioned to him that I…

I had my breaking point at work and now I do as little as I can while getting as much overtime as possible.

Obligatory using a throwaway account disclaimer. And long rant incoming so TLDR at the bottom. I have been at this company for 5 years now. It's my first “big boy” job, with full time hours, benefits, etc. When I first started, I actually had hopes that by working hard enough and proving myself, I would be rewarded. But over those 5 years, I have been constantly fucked over by this place. Now to give some background my job is not particularly the most difficult. If you can read, write, know basic computer skills and have common sense, within 3 months anyone can do it. However, each person has a specific job function, which leads to an issue where only that person knows how to 100% and seamlessly perform those duties. In my case, I work in shipping, and I am the only one that knows the shipping requirements for every…

The tech industry turned on a dime

I started my career in the tech industry a little over ten years ago. I had nothing but great things to say about my experience in the industry (in a multitude of roles across 3 companies). I regularly bragged about livable wages, great work/life balance, generous benefits, and more. I had a 16 week maternity leave that I extended an extra week due to daycare waitlists – simply emailed my manager “hey can I get another week” and he said “sure np” and that was literally it. Was encouraged to take mental health breaks, never dealt with micromanagement, felt like my managers had interesting and reasonable goals, I could go on. What the hell happened?? My current (4th) company is tech-adjacent and it is a goddamn nightmare. Insane micromanagement, constant false sense of urgency, looming layoffs, feeling punished for taking PTO, stagnant wages and slashed bonuses, just garbage. I thought…
