Working for a massive non-profit in the US for the last 5 years. I’ve worked 80 hours weeks with no days off 4 weeks in a row a few times over those 5 years. Usually working well over 40 every week. We’ve all been constantly told we’ll get benefits soon for years and no results. There’s always an excuse. We’re also all titled as temporary employees. We all work hourly and have no job security. Some weeks we suddenly aren’t scheduled and just don’t work that week. Is it legal to have a temp working 40 hours a week for 5 years with no benefits? Any thing I can do or site to fix this or stand up for myself?
Month: August 2023
I started in at my current job in 2015 after the online retailer I worked for left the county once their tax break expired. It was a bit of a shitshow from the start as I was hired for data entry and coverage at the front desk (in another building which should've been a clue to the shitshow). My second morning I received a call from my then boss that i was going to work at the front desk full-time. Whatever, I needed a job. After five years of, I transferred departments because there wasn't any growth in the front desk and at the at most 3% they gave out in raises – it would've taken 10 years to get back to what I was making when the distribution center closed. It was a lateral move but it got me into a better department and a new boss. I got…
My point. If you make $22/hr (a fair, not particularly low salary) you're essentially expected to stay busy at work. “if you have time to lean you have time to clean” standard. Yet if you make 250k a year you can take elongated lunches, decide to take a day off without negative repercussions. Basically, the way I see it is; If you make enough to not be dependant on your employer, they understand you can leave if you aren't given the freedom and equality that IMO we're all entitled to. But if you're an average wagie, they know your bootstraps are a tied to like a noose around your neck….And we're all, or at least most of us, are just waiting, on the precipice of death, for some mild inconvenience to kick the proverbial chair out from under us.
My contract with the current employer will not be renewed in a few weeks. The company is letting me go without cause – it's not my fault. My manager has told me that he needs to inform the team about my departure and is planning to do it in my presence. I suggested that maybe he could do it without me around but his way is apparently how they do it. Is it just me or is that kind of unprofessional? What am I supposed to do during the announcement, apart from feeling extremely uncomfortable and feeling all eyes on me? Let's picture the situation… Boss: “Hi everyone, I'd like to inform you that xdarkshinex won't be working with us soon, we're not renewing her contract” awkward crickets Everyone: … Me: … Someone: Oh, okay… Great idea. Thanks, boss! “Boss” for not much longer, luckily.
I could use some help
Hey all, If you read this block of text, I could use some advice. I started a job in July of 2022 and 3 weeks in my coworker (same team as me, I'll refer to them as Misery) verbally berated me in the office. For context, the office is like a library, you could hear a pin drop. I also, hadn't done anything wrong in this situation and had several people reach out to me after it happened. During this time my direct boss was out on vacation. After being yelled at I promptly messaged in Teams to Misery and asked if we could speak about what just happened and they refused. A day later during the week this happened, I started experiencing heart palpitations for a couple weeks and even saw a heart doctor/ran tests. Everything came back fine so the doctor gave the diagnoses of it being nothing…
My manager made a meeting for what appeared to be outside of work hours (7:30am). I totally forgot I was in central time even though my job/permanent location is in eastern time. My work calendar reflected central time, not eastern time when I was traveling, of course. I kinda freaked out and totally forgot that I was in central time. I sent an email replying with “I noticed this is outside contracted business hours, is there a way that we can make the meeting later?” My manager responded with “It says 8:30am on my calendar, you must be in a different time zone” Then it hit me. Oops. I apologized immediately via email and mentioned I forgot I was in a different time zone. He didn't seem to be upset and our meeting today went well without any mentioning of it. Could this make me look bad/ get in trouble/…
Went to part time interview
Went to a part time interview. I had my availability listed on the application. I got there and the guy who interviewed me was like I don't need this day but if you want to work these two that's fine. He went to go get paperwork and returned in less than a minute talking about do you have any more days you can work? I said no because I'm working the other days and that this would put me working seven days a week but I needed money. They wasted my time and money when this could've been done over phone.
Worked for this company for YEARS. Started in another city, moved and started working for the same store in another city. Hours had been getting cut so i was already pissed and looking for other jobs. worst part is they hire these new people and give them my hours but they’re so unreliable they end up calling me in because they called out. The day i was scheduled to go into work i had a sinus flare up that blocked my airways and had to be taken to the ER as i was pretty much suffocating. Wake up the next day, still in the hospital, with a text from my manager. he asks where i was yesterday and i told him and all he could say was “you didn’t think to let us know before hand? now it’s a no call no show” i just didn’t respond to this message…
What jobs are now open to me? A boring office job with 45k per year would be nice for a couple of years. Keep in mind that a lot of jobs won't work. It has to be a job where I can learn as I go. I can't get hired as a computer programmer and learn on the job. Assume, for the sake of argument, that I am of average intelligence.
