I work in Human Resources for a government agency, and my HR director is a big bully. She gets high off of intimidation and humiliation behind closed doors. She spreads rumors about employees she dislikes and shares her hate openly. Her moods are unpredictable and erratic. Work has become a hostile place to be. A few weeks ago I took a vacation. My director calls and messages me for the entirety of the my time off, which I was annoyed with, but understood because we had a time sensitive project she needed assistance with. Now when I get back to work the next week, as soon as I log on I receive a call from her. I join the call and she starts raising her voice then full on screaming bloody murder, accusing me of not having enough PTO for this vacation. What? Mind you, I had more than enough…
Month: August 2023
When I was 19 I was conned into taking out a stupid amount of private student loans. Mostly from College Ave. If I stop paying the federal ones, they'll just start garnishing wages. But if I flip the bird to the private lenders…? I mean, are they seriously gonna try to sue me? How far do they think that will get?
I work in retail, at one of those big box stores in Fresh. For the last 6 months we have been getting so much product and management seems to think it's normal to have such an overflow of things that end up going bad in a week and tossed out. Lately they've been expecting us to go through everything (that seems like a week's worth) every single day, reaming us for not getting done and having too much overstock. It's become a seemingly endless cycle, where we can't catch up. Just the thought of having to go back tomorrow to the same thing is just making me upset as I write this, and getting pulled aside being asked “why can't you guys just get this done?” has become annoying as well. Unfortunately, I don't have experience in anything else but retail, and I've felt for weeks like I want to…
Look, the system doesn’t work, and we are all sick of it. People here can complain endlessly about how horrible the system is, but why aren’t we actually doing something about it? Complaining won’t change things. What would need to be done to get rid of this system in favor of democratic socialism? Do we need to amend the constitution? Make sure Republicans never win elections? Vote blue no matter who? Find a real socialist candidate that we can vote for? What is the game plan to enact real change?
I (26F) quit my job this time last year because I was disrespected by my manager who spoke to me less than 5 times 1-on-1 since I joined and had been with the company for 2.5+ years. I let my ego take over and I have no regrets for upholding my self worth. I got into a mostly remote job for the last 9 months that I absolutely hated from day 1. My mental health has been in the mud for such a long time now. I have terrible posture, weak joints, and poor fitness. I want to quit this job and do a martial arts boot camp to recalibrate for at least 3 months. I think when I am older I will hate myself even more for not prioritising my health while I’m still young. i had no problems sleeping until my current job and I was one month…
I don't even know what to think anymore. I don't know whether to laugh or cry at this point. I don't know what the powers that be want of me anymore. I have been applying for jobs for almost a year now and it's just been a vicious cycle of rejection. Only twice in dozens of applications did I get invited for an interview, both times to no avail (the job market in my field is extremely competitive). The situation has gotten progressively more desperate as my finances are seriously getting tight, and I'm reaching the point where I won't be able to pay for anything anymore. Then, two months ago, I FINALLY met an employer who actually believed in me and my abilities. Not just ANY employer, mind you, a good one. A famous one in my country. I felt like I had struck gold. The initial position I…
I lived in the US for decades and most people don't know that you can indeed actually just leave the US – if you have parents or grandparents who were immigrants from a handful of countries. For example: If your parent or any grandparent was born in Ireland you are already an Irish citizen. All you have to do is get their original Irish birth cert (you call the church in the town they were born to get this – there's immaculate records in these churches), fill out a Foreign Birth Registration with the Irish embassy or consulate in your area and then you can apply for an Irish passport with that. Once you have this passport you're free to live and work in any EU country. Other countries that consider you a citizen of your grandparents were born there: Austria France Malta Belgium Germany Netherlands Bulgaria Greece Poland Croatia…
Company too small for benefits?
I work for a small company in the most expensive city in Canada. Currently trying to start my own business and ran out of savings so I had to get a job. Turns out the new job is at another startup, the pay was when I first started and I asked about benefits I was told “not at first” and the pay was 10k under what I needed, but I didn’t press the issue because I was desperate. Now a few months down, i know our company’s margins are huge, I need some physio and stuff but can’t afford the sessions without benefits, so I ask our owner if it’s still in his plans to get us benefits, he responds that in a company under 10 employees we are too small to qualify for group benefits, and he will try to get us some when we pass that threshold (we…
I was let go 10 days into a job
I started an industrial maintenance job about two weeks ago. It's a field I've got the better part of a decade of experience in, so I was comfortable in the setting and with what I expected to be asked of me. The place was disorganized as hell though. No clearly defined responsibilities. Inventory was not labeled, in multiple places, and had no means of tracking quantity. Was given no training on the particular facility other than a basic tour and wasn't assigned to shadow or train with anyone in particular, just left to my own devices. I punch out Wednesday and go home. 20 minutes later I get a phone call from the staffing agency they contracted me through and get told they don't want me back due to my “inability to stay on task”. What tasks? I had been given zero direction since I got there. Probably a good…
Just have to get off my chest how quickly corporate managed to destroy my spirit. I decided to quit academia about a year ago because the 60h work week without any career perspectives was getting to me, and traded my postdoc position for a job in a big company. In the beginning I absolutely loved it, I only had to work 40h a week, could work from home whenever I wanted, and I regained all the motivation I lost during my academic career. I started together with 3 other people in the same role, and I very quickly managed to stand out from the pack. I easily did 3-4x more work that the others, picking up extra tasks left and right while still comfortably clocking out at 5 o'clock each day. Manager is praising me all the time, the work is fun and I was very happy. Now, because I…
