When job listings disappear: The rise of ghost employers

Hello denizens of /r/antiwork; We need to talk about something that's been bothering me, and many others, lately. I recently came across some alarming statistics from a survey conducted among 1,045 managers involved in the hiring process regarding ghost jobs. For those who might not know, ghost jobs are job listings that remain active even after the position has been filled or when there are no immediate plans to fill it. Here are some key takeaways from the survey: 68% of managers had job postings active for more than 30 days 1 in 10 managers have had a job posting open for over 6 months 1 in 5 managers don't plan to fill open job positions until 2023 (the survery was conducted from August 31, 2022 to September 1, 2022) 50% of managers keep job postings open because they’re “always open to new people” What's concerning is that these ghost…

Millenials, capital advantage and sell-out middle management

One notable trend in the aftermath of the great financial crisis is how many millenials who went to college then proceeded to live at home with their parents to save money for years or lived at a relative's property and paid a fraction of the rent. In a reasonable sense this was likely a survival strategy to maintain a position in the corporate hierarchy. This massive advantage allowed many millenials the opportunity to accumulate a significant amount of capital to either payoff their student loans more freely or hoard money for a down payment on a house. Many then obtained management titles and the majority preach that they are self made. To defend their “hard work” there seems to be a tendency to smear struggling independent people that actually live paycheck to paycheck who took a greater risk by trying to move out and “be an adult”. Due to this…

any tips for a upcoming adult?

I (M17) am going to be a legal adult soon, and not gonna lie, seeing how everything’s been going on right now, it seems pretty scary. the constant inflation, the constant risks of economic collapse/defaulting, salaries not keeping up with the economy, rent, taxes, debt, loans, and so much more are honestly making me stressed for my future. I currently work at McDonalds right now, i’ve been working there since i turned 15. I am usually pretty good with the money I make, I don’t spend a lot, and put a lot of money in my savings which is about $3500. Even though I think I am doing fine right now, it seems like i will need to do more to prepare, so could any of y’all give me suggestions? thanks!

Anyone else ever feel guilty for calling out?

I got a new job as a Line Cook about 2ish weeks ago. Get paid dog shit obviously and I’m on night/closing shift alone which wouldn’t be so bad if not for the fact it’s still busy as hell and there’s one asshole manager who makes it his life’s mission to make everything as painful as possible. To the extent he makes us do stupid crap before we’re allowed to go home that no other manager would ask us to do. And generally treats you like a child and talks down to you. Last time I closed with him we got swamped with orders at he stood there trying to pop quiz me or go “and what should you be doing now… asking for my help?” I also got put on about 6 or 7 days straight the first week I was on. I told them when I started I…

Firm Decides to End Hybrid Work *for certain employees

I work at a relatively large, multi-state firm. I was hired to the smalled office location in 2021 as an administrative assistant. At the time of being hired, I was told that the firm was almost fully remote, with the expectation to stay as a hybrid work environment as time went on. I have been working in the office for three days, and from home two days a week for the last year and a half without incident or compaint. During both of my yearly reviews I was given great reviews and was congratulated for my ability to work from home. Three weeks ago, my boss requested that I change my days working from home. I had been working the same schedule for a year and a half, but I agreed to change so that I’d be in the office the same days as him. When we first made this…

Two weeks notice retribution

Workplace Problems I just yesterday gave my two weeks notice with a catering company I work for. Today I got my schedule for the coming week and noticed I'm down from five days to only three all of a sudden, two of my most profitable days at that. This feels entirely like it's retribution and it's an absolutely terrible company. What if anything should I be doing in this situation?

Hybrid bait and switch

Long time fan, first time caller… Employer just hired me and 4 other analysts for a growing department. At every step in the recruiting process they told each of us that it would be 3 days in, 2 remote. Just 30 days into the job, they decide to tell us that they are clawing back one of the remote days in order to “promote culture“. It is clear in talking to colleagues, that they’ve been planning to return to full time in office for a while and could have easily told us in our interviews. I took the job because of the flexibility and negotiated my salary under that assumption. Now I’m wondering how to approach. I’ve already my manager that I was unhappy with it and that I felt like it was a bait and switch. He just gives me the “it’s outta my hands” look. The worst part…

I want to quit my job. I’m lost and need advice.

28F I’m a certified medical assistant. I’ve been in healthcare since 2018. First job was front desk at an Urgent Care, and I went to a few other different jobs in healthcare. I’ve been at my current job for 11 months. I drive one hour to and from work daily. Im not happy at all, but just staying in my job since it’s stable. I make $18.47/hour in texas. Also, I’ve worked with very shitty companies and management where I have been fired from 2-3 healthcare jobs in the past 5 years, which made me feel like I didn’t have what it takes to progress in healthcare, so that made me keep trying. I have associates degree in liberal arts and sciences. I want to change career paths asap. I’m very creative and have a few different social medias with a lot of followers. I like editing videos and I…

Am I getting a promotion? I think I might be. 29(f)

I work for a large corporation. I recently was moved into a higher role. I am over a few branches. My boss knows that I want to move up. They asked me today to help them with closing a location. Afterwards, we went to a bar for drinks. This is out of character for us. We don’t typically do things like that. We have a distant relationship because that’s appropriate. The whole thing was still very professional, we just had a drink after a stressful day of letting people go. He started telling me things that are above my pay grade. Started asking me about my goals. I found out that there was a shift in the company. He said he was going to submit me for the role. A lot of people who have been around me have been acting like they know something that I don’t. I can’t…
