Context: I (25M) live in Torrance Southern California. I work with my dad in the construction industry mostly specializing in concrete. My dad has been in the field for decades and it was how he put food and roof up for me growing up. We're non union, I know, my first mistake, but my dad seems to be against union for some reason and I don't know much about much so I just picked up the trade with him as I got older if that makes any sense. Times have been very hard the last few years for us like they have been for everyone. We don't have a working car anymore that we own (we bum rides and use the company truck) and live paycheck to paycheck (which is why 2 days late pay can make a big deal…) Anyways, onto the issue at hand. The boss of the…
Month: August 2023
I’ve checked out this sub a couple of times, seen a lot of posts. Some complaints are justified, like rich people cheating on their taxes, corrupt politicians protecting them, huge gap between rich & poor. And others just come off as people being lazy & whining, not really putting forth effort. Where is that fine line? I mean the system is screwed up & corrupt, but at the same time it’s not impossible to make your dreams come true with enough effort & thought put into it. This is coming from someone who grew up shifting between poverty & lower middle class, with an alcoholic & drug abusing father & with a bit of a rough upbringing.
Monday I feel it especially strong. It feels like I'm being marched towards my own certain death and destruction for my entire family while being forced to provide for the farmer.
Ex-boss won’t send my last paycheck
I was working in Washington state for a few months, I was fired inside 90 days for pushing back on constant wage theft. My ex-boss refuses to send my last paycheck (surprise), it’s now 15 days late. It’s a small company, ex-boss is owner and manager, When I ask about my pay, he lies, creates dumb excuses and is in general a huge asshole just because, so talking to him isn’t going anywhere. The company also misrepresented when I worked, saying I didn’t work when I did and instead logged those hours in the next pay period when I was already moved out of state, I only know they did this because I got the paystub with the weird schedule. Still no pay though! How do I get my paycheck and move on from this nightmare? Thanks. Edit: Yes, ALL the employees have dealt with wage theft, since the beginning.
Monday Morning Dread
I used to have Monday morning dread because of the job itself. But now that I’ve switched and actually like my job there’s a new kind of dread. It’s turned into existential “the earth is dying, climate change will kill us all, you will never be able to retire, the cost of living crisis will spiral out of control, you will never buy a house and you are a powerless little pawn in the capitalist machine” dread. Am I alone here or is this normal now?
I’m resigning tomorrow via text message!
I am currently working in a touristy shop that makes lots of sales but won’t pay us right and is a minimum wage job. I’m just doing the work part time while waiting to be in a job that I like again. My current bosses tells me I’m their favorite and always saying to never leave them. I’ve been nothing but nice even if I don’t like them but there’s a “friendly” vibe between us. After 20+ interviews and rejections, I got hired to join the management team of a luxury/designer department store and I’m starting in 2 weeks. I will be fulltime and will get benefits. And I am stupid for being anxious about resigning but I will do it tomorrow. Just don’t know what to say.
Part time work
Hi members, I want to share my experience of working in full time logistics job and now part time teaching , I am 35 F , last year I spent my entire time on the job working full time and overtime. I was working in logistics industry, dispatching and managing drivers which was very stressful because of deadlines and micromanagement by the company owners. Every inconsequential error was magnified . Emails were scrutinized and we were asked constantly why we haven’t responded to email received 10-15 minutes ago. Apart from that, there were only men in my office ( lot of testosterone , bantering and ego clash happening) . As a woman , I was not respected and was always told to toughen up and be more aggressive with drivers even though I had good rapport with them. They respected me because I respected them. This job was having a…
I have been in interview hell since being laid off back in February. A few months ago, I found an open position at my “dream company” (or as close as one can get). I made it through the interview gauntlet, and was told I was chosen for the position. Dream come true. I negotiated with the recruiter and waited to receive an offer but … it never came. Eventually they told me the position had been paused due to budgeting issues (“reworking the hiring plan”). The whiplash of success/relief followed by rejection and returning financial worry was pretty rough. A couple weeks ago the recruiter got back to me and said they reopened the position, BUT because it is a California company and the position had been closed for over 30 days, the law required them to re-list it for at least 5 days and interview new people. Something smells…
I’m sure it happens all the time.
I wonder how often it happens that a star employee, who was passed over for the position of supervisor, is expected to train the new supervisor on how everything works.
I don't want to be super specific about where I work, but I work at sort of hotel with several different pools and rec centers. At the centers, my team sells alcohol, pool toys, etc. Our POS system is extremely cheap. Months ago, the card reader at one of our most popular pools stopped reading card chips, and credit swipes. We could still enter the card number manually, and the tap feature worked. After a couple months I brought this up to our head manager. To my surprise, this was the first she'd heard of it. She said since the reader was under warranty, we'd be able to get a new one. A month goes by, and several texts later with no response, we still don't have a replacement card reader. Now for the last week, our card reader has not been working at all. I tried to be proactive…
