School District Boned Me

Title. I’ve been working as a tutor at my local community college since I was a student there. This last school year I worked remote because I transferred to a University 6 hours from home. Knowing that I would be continuing to work remotely as I’m 6 hours away, they offered to let me return as a remote tutor so I resigned a yearly employee contract. Only now, 2 weeks before my school and work were set to start I’ve been told that the budget cuts they knew were coming went through and now I’m out of a job. Not sure if this is the place ti post about it but just needed somewhere to vent about these mfers stringing me along for 2/3 months instead of being transparent and allowing me to collect Unemployment benefits and look for a new job.

401k if you join in the middle of the year.

if company contributes 50% upto 6% of compensation. this mean if my salary is 12k/year, I earn 1k per month company can match upto $360 per year(3% of 12k). if I join in the middle of the year, then I will be getting total salary only 6k(1k per month for remaining 6 months), in that case company can contribute upto 3% of total salary i.e. 12k or 3% of only salary I got for that year i.e 6k. if answer is company can still contribute 3% of total salary. then I will select 12% contribution . Thanks

New job with no training or direction

Started a new job approximately 4 weeks ago. I haven't really been trained at all. Told to sit at my desk and read for the first week..then I shadowed a few ppl for about an hour then back to the desk. Here I am 4 weeks later still sitting at the same desk..rereading things because I'm bored. No guidance, no structure, no leadership. I've already gotten told off once by a person in upper management to “take initiative and figure it out myself” so now I'm hesitant to ask questions. Am I totally screwed? Should I look for a new job or stick it out?

Now that we’ve seen the post about people working hard/specialized/higher Ed. Jobs for 50k or less, where are all the people making 100k or more doing… anything, please, tell us.

Hello, as you may know, there’s a string of posts and TikToks going around about living wages, and how most people are/have always suffered. I linkd a recent post, which started the conversation on the small side (50k average). I have always lived on the small side. My family lives on the small side. I don’t know many people who make more than 50k usually. We grew up poor usually. But I do ask people often. People often don’t mind telling me. because I’ve asked, I’ve learned a lot from people, that some people make tons of munny for doing seemingly easy or unrelated things, while some people work hard and still get paid terribly. For full time work (usually ACTUALLY more like 60+ hrs/wk), I’ve always only made around 20k a year, maybe 30k a year at some points in my life. (I can list jobs in comments if…

My parents need help

My parents are gen xers if I'm not mistaken and they're in the mindset of “you don't have the experience you can't do that job, they won't even look at you” blah blah blah. And Their advice to get the experience I supposedly need is to volunteer, take a pay cut even though I'm all of only one days pay from not being able to afford rent or some other typical boomer shit that wouldn't actually pay the bills. It's sad because they think this would actually work when in fact I've done this before and most of the time it was simply because I was too young(no literally one manager said he was looking for someone in their late 20s early 30s). I'm friggin 33 with managerial experience, leadership skills from JROTC and ROTC and military along with having jobs that have managing myself. I mentioned maybe a office…

Anxiety of getting fired bc of hybrid requirements

I started out as a contractor for this job, wfh full time because I live in another state from my team. I knew I wanted a full time job with them because their benefits are great. Early spring of last year they laid off a bunch of folks for not going to the office 50% of the time. This didn’t apply to contractors. April I accepted an offer, thinking I can make 50% of the time work (there’s an office nearby my city). What happens when I go to the office? I sit on zoom for a few hours, get a bit of work done, eat some snacks, then come home at lunch. Now I can barely get myself to go in once a week. I’m going to talk to my boss about possibly making me full time remote, especially bc nobody I work with is in the office. It…

The internet has destroyed work as we know it.

The internet is a machine for hyper-powering competition, which oppresses us all. Traditional work values of community, responsibility, and mutual care between employee and employer are totally thrown out the window. The internet allows everyone to compete with everyone else on the planet. At first this might be fun and interesting as a consumer, because you get access to so many more goods and media. But for workers this is awful. In an environment of hyper-competition, there needs to be metrics. The software-ization of everything has created a huge number of ways to measure and rank people. Clicks, views, likes, upvotes, subscribers, followers, swipes, whatever you want. A single number that shows your value. This is Marxist alienation at its finest. The above metrics are common for social media, but the same is happening in all aspects of work. Ecommerce is all about clicks and views and funnels. Gig work…

Does anyone else feel like PTO just isn’t cutting it?

My company has about 1 work week of vacation hours and 1.5 weeks of sick hours. Every 35-40 hours you work, you earn about 0.5 of accumulated vacation hours. For 52 weeks in the year, that’s just seems ridiculous. Furthermore, my understanding is that MOST companies give PTO similar to this. Perhaps it’s my neurodivergence that makes me think this is not enough time (Dx: PTSD, GAD, ADHD) but I can’t help but think even neurotypical people should need more weeks off than just 2, maybe 3 total. Pease tell me your opinion

What is the best job for former teachers and big extroverts?

I am thinking of leaving education one day. I want to get my Master’s Degree in something else that can further my chances of a high paying job once I finished the program. I’m tired of how hard I have to work everyday when it seems like my friends are only working half the time and are bored at their jobs. My husband said I should do coding but I really want to work with people. Im a big extrovert and dream of work happy hours, softball leagues, and having work be full of friends (is this even a thing?)! It would be cool to make closer to 60-70k rather than barely making 50k! Also would be cool to have a job where it’s not “Go! Go! Go!” every second even though I can handle high stress and multitasking. I love data analysis, I am great as a leader, communication,…

I made myself sick to get off work

I (19F) work as a waiter in france for a holiday job, only my boss is making me work 50h weeks and then still asking me to come in on my days off. He also refused to let me finish my contract early so I can get a rest before term starts so I now start uni the day after I finish work and have to do a 6h train ride across France just to be there. I've been so tired bc of this job and today I just couldn't take it so I shoved a toothbrush down my throat so I threw up just so I could get an afternoon off. My colleagues are phoning me and getting pissed off now bc they're understaffed, but I really can't take working tonight, I haven't had a proper rest in 4 months.
