Inheritocracy

I've lost rich friends recently. Rich friends who, by virtue of being rich, have little hope of ever being able to understand where I'm coming from. People from rich families lack the emotional capacity to care for those without a similar experience to them. Their financial cushions protect them against having to carry out anywhere near as much emotional labour or care. Paid nannies stand in for older siblings; paid tutors stand in for a siblings' helping hand with homework; entertainment systems stand in for improvised, imaginative play. The empathetic muscle thus goes unexercised in childhood. These former “friends” are becoming landlords; influencers; inheriting apartments in their mid twenties. Despite all that, their victim complex is seemingly never-ending. They'll constantly complain about their lives, fabricating intra-group drama out of nothing, fashioning their lifestyles after the fake plastic model set out for them by Love Island. The only topic they can…

Got a raise. Now I’m making less money.

Everyone in the company got their annual raise recently. Mine was a whopping 30 cents. Ok, it’s something at least. Came into work today to find that everyone, even management, has had their hours cut but a half-hour each day. My 37 hour work week has gone down to 34. Wtf I just put my first payment in on a car and then this happens? Update: I was told that this hour cut is very likely temporary so I at least feel better about this whole thing. I will gladly take the extra half-hour of sleep lmao

Is Leaving Worth It?

I (23F) have a job that is an excellent stepping stone to my career. The mission of the job itself is something I love, but the hours and pay are awful. After an entire month, all I can do is pay my share of the rent and utilities, I can’t even afford groceries and I can barely afford the gas it costs to drive 45 minutes to and from work. I knew this upfront but assumed (due to past experiences with working with similar industries) that there would be a lot of opportunities to gain additional hours and such, but this is not the case. I’ve even suggested opportunities for additional hours that I think would be great but they were never looked into. I’ve applied to the Next Step of this career outside of the place I am currently employed and I am waiting to hear back from that.…

Landlords are the reason inflation is so high.

Landlords are the reason inflation is so high. The CPI report has shown for almost a year now rents have played an outsized roll in the increase in costs. According to the wall street journal homelessness has increased and profit margins for reits that target single family homes are skyrockting. According to PEW trust investors own 1/4th of all single family homes at this point. If landlords want to increase homelessness and destroy the American dream I don't understand why people aren't fighting for stronger tenant and community protections against speculators. Tenants protections, rent control, anti-airbnb laws, Vacancy taxes, land value tax etc. sources: https://www.livemint.com/news/homeless-numbers-rise-in-u-s-cities-11687171923240.html https://www.billtrack50.com/blog/investment-firms-and-home-buying/#:~:text=According%20to%20data%20reported%20by,22%25%20of%20American%20homes%20sold.

I hate how companies misrepresent their pay rates on ads!

I've been out of work for years and am just finally able to get out there. Looking for a job is seriously a damn job in itself! We have to navigate scams and resume rewrites and cover letters etc. But the worst is the carrot on the stick pay rates. I saw this job insurance marketing representative 67-100k! I have 7 years of insurance experience and I know this company loves my former company! It was perfect! I never made over 40k so hell ya I'll apply! Next day ad was edited 38-58k well not as good but I'll still hope for a nice mid range I guess. I get a call from the hiring department shortly afterward. “pay is 40-45k blah blah blah market conditions..”! Here's a great idea: how about if you know that is the actual range then put it in your fucking ad! I'm so damn…

Decided not to apply to a job because the ad was too quirky and the compensation was listed as “good af”

Look, we all get it. You want the young cool kids to apply, you want to say people at work can talk about what kind of weed they like, you decided the “no tattoo” policy was stupid back in 2009 when Obama was inaugurated, you're looking for a rock star, I fucking get it. Is this the new “looking for a rockstar” ad? Because I see it everywhere now from food trucks to pop up kitchens. You're the next new cool pizza place, or you're lying about always have been the new cool pizza place since 1985. Can you maybe tell me what the job is and how much it pays? I love a great work environment with great people, but maybe just say you're cool instead of trying to insist you are? Because the more you try to sell how cool you are the less I believe it, especially…

I feel like my job is poisoning my brain

I am struggling so hard with my job right now. I graduated college in 2022 and this is my first “real” job. I was hired at an entry level and I had an awesome mentor. Not even 6 months in and that mentor left to work somewhere else (can't blame him) and the company is so small that I basically replaced him and became senior level since no one else there does what I do. So no one can help me or take some of my work. I also didn't get any kind of raise or title change which I really should have because I did NOT sign up for this. My company frequently accepts projects with unrealistic short deadlines and has limited resources and lots of incompentent people. There are so many unwritten expectations my boss gets angry at me for and middle aged coworkers trying to offload their…

Can a job doc hours from a salaried employee for going to the doctor?

I live in Washington. I'm a salaried employee and a couple of others are too but abuse theirs.. We got a new accounting lady and she wants to start doing hours of sick time when we miss time. I went to the doctor today and she wants to use 2 hours of sick to cover my hours missed.

Wage grid fuckery

May 1st I moved into a middle management position at a large human services work agency, this was after two years of covering off on the position while the supervisor in the position worked remotely. This means I was supervising and training new hires directly without being paid. I did negotiate an improved wage with the new position. Today, I came to find out a new wage grid was approved by our board in July without any announcement. So now instead of being on step 5/7 I’m on 2/7. I began advocating for my team and myself to retain their steps on the grid so new hires won’t be receiving more money than those with experience. Only to find that not only was I doing a supervisory position without being paid for two years but I was training people who were getting paid more than me while I was doing…
