Not sure how to feel

Don’t post much so forgive me if it’s really short or poor quality. Posting from mobile. Got an offer last werk for a contracting gig with the dod, currently working as an electromechanical technician for a global company. I fix factory equipment in a shitty, osha violation ridden plant on the second shift, 3pm-11pm. My supervisor told HR this morning that he “felt like I would be quitting soon” which makes no sense to me because not once have I displayed any kind of negativity at work, I’m chronically optimistic and will be in good spirits despite the shit show I work for, and he also recommended my termination today. When I showed up for my shift, I told him that this coming Friday will be my last day, because I got an offer I can’t refuse that needs me to start the following week. He was happy for me,…

Tired of crying at least once a week

I wasted money on a college degree because I don’t need one for my current job. I want a better job because the pay is next to nothing and it makes me too tired to do the things I actually enjoy. I’ve applied to hundreds of jobs to actually use my degree and have only gotten a few interviews but still rejected in the end. I’ve lost all hope for things getting better. I’ve graduated years ago now but still haven’t been able to move out of my parents house cuz I don’t make enough money to cover rent, car, and student loans (not to mention the federal loans will kick in soon). I feel like I made every wrong decision my entire life. im at a loss on how to even move forward.

my company says, they ignore inflation when deciding on comp changes

They only consider individual performance, company performance and market salary conditions. I can't decide if this is a rational or short sighted stance. It, for sure, is counter intuitive. What do you guys think?

Why the job market forces us to choose specific careers if we want to have a living-wage job easily?

I'm sick of the job market undervaluing humanities and the social sciences and condemning us to underemployment or unemployment. It's like if the only way to have decent, living-wage jobs is to pursue a STEM career. Why does it have to be like that?

Supervisor is upset I found someone to cover my mandatory overtime shift

I work M-F, day shift at a food manufacturing facility. A few years ago my manager split my shift into three groups. Rather than have the entire crew come in every Saturday these smaller groups would rotate Saturdays. I’m only required to work every third Saturday. I don’t need to work overtime. I’ve been fortunate that between me and my wife we make enough to support our family. So I try to get out of as many Saturday shifts as possible. By scheduling vacation over my scheduled Saturdays or asking a coworker if they’d like to volunteer. I’ve worked maybe 5 Saturdays in the last year. I love it, I get to spend time at home with my wife and little boy. Today I asked a fellow employee to cover my upcoming Saturday shift. He says “No Problem.” Great. Boss comes to me later and says he doesn’t think it’s…

New co-worker training me is a narcissist and a bully

So I just started working at a company that makes labels for different types of products. I run what is called a slitter machine. For contacts I have many years of previous experience running Slater machines and about 4 months running the particular type of machine that I am now running at my new job so I'm by no means ignorant of what it takes to run the job or operate this machine. So about a month ago I got hired at a new company and everything went fine for my first week I found out on my first day that the guy that would be my coworker and training me was off on vacation for that entire first week so first week went by everything was fine. With the exception that I heard from all of my other co-workers how the guy I would be working with what's called…

Caught using website not related to work on my work computer

I work remotely and was watching a live stream of a golf event from a sketchy site on my work computer. I just got an email today from our security team that was sent to both me and my boss. It mentioned that I tried to access a malicious site. It even mentioned some coaching points my boss could provide me, which leads me to believe I won’t be fired. I’ve already taken some steps to troubleshoot my computer for viruses and cleared my cache and cookies. My question is, do you all think I should reply to the email apologizing and mentioning the troubleshooting I’ve done? Or should I wait until tomorrow when inevitably, my boss asked to meet with me at which point I can go over what I’ve done. I think replying to the email might be better but am not sure.

I Did Some Math

I have a PhD in the social sciences. This means I'm unemployable. I assumed having a PhD would make me hard to employ. I didn't think it'd make me entirely unemployable. That's fine, I'll have to adapt. Eventually I'll adapt my way into a tent in a ravine, but at least I'll have adapted. I'm staying positive here, people. In the meantime, I'm whiling away the hours doing some math based on a few wild assumptions: My having a PhD makes me an auto-reject for the vast majority of automated systems. Let's say the error rate there is 1/1000. That means 1 in 1000 applications will make it through to a human. My having a PhD makes me an auto-reject for the vast majority of humans. Let's say the error rate there is 1/50 (there are some generous/very foolish humans). My having a PhD makes me an auto-reject in an…

The best customer I’ve ever had

I work at the vitamin shop and today a couple asked me where the calcium, magnesium, and zinc is. I took them to the part of the store where it is and they were very kind about it. After taking 2 bottles, they asked me if I could show them where the milk thistle extract was and I told them I didn't know what they were talking about (I've only been here for a month and 6 days). They were super nice and said they'd just look around. However my manager was within earshot and asked them what they needed help with. They told him they were looking for milk thistle extract and he took them to it. After they paid for their stuff, my manager started going psycho on me. Telling me I'm worthless and should just quit so he “doesn't have to go through the trouble of firing…

I left the corporate world behind to make cat figurines.

I worked as a corporate advertising guy for 10 years. Well, 12 now, if you count the last two. But mentally I checked out just after the plague. Did I say checked out? Burnt out, more like. I found myself hyper-ventilating on the stairwell at 3am in the morning over some insane deadlines for a major sportswear client. And that was it. I threw in the towel. I needed an out. But I also needed money. Ain't that life? So I went freelance and looked for clients that would give me a maximum day rate for a minimum mental load. That meant doing absolute menial creative work like photo retouching for shitty brands, and writing copy (ChatGPT made that easier over the past year). In that time I was exasperated. The thing is in my previous job I had a kinda prestigious title at a very good agency. Now I…
