False promise of hire screwed me out of a job

This happened a few years ago but I saw a post that reminded me of it and ya know what? I'm still mad, so let's go. Disclaimer: long post, I'm on mobile, blah blah blah, English is my first language so no excuse for poor grammer. Fall semester of 2019 I was taking a fast track CNC certification course at a local college. For those that don't know, CNC machining is basically a trade job where you run a computer controlled machine to cut parts from stock material. While taking the course I got my first machining job but since I was still learning all they would let me do was load parts onto machining pallets. It was pretty boring and everyone else there seemed depressed but not the worst job I ever had. So while working full time and going to class, I found out my wife (gf at…

I hurt my back two weeks ago at work. I don’t think they want me going to the doctor, should I?

So, Two weeks ago, I (26m) lhurt my back at work. I am a blue collar worker. And reported the incident. Last week I spent the week sitting in the work truck, icing and stretching my back. This week I spent at home, paid, icing, some heat, and stretching my back. It got bad enough at one point I couldn’t walk one night. Sometimes it hurts a crap ton and other times it doesn’t hurt much. I’d describe the pain as labour, exhausting, and sometimes sharp. The pain is in my lower back up to my mid back and radiates into my rib cage on the right side. Anyways, tonight it hurts to breathe. I feel like they don’t want me to go to the doctor and just rest it out, but it’s been two weeks now. Should I give it more time? They said I should just rest and…

Why do so many places and Bosses/Managers think the only way to get people to do things are thru threats and demands?

I get told I moat do this or I most leave at this time even tho leaving to deliver at the time is like 3 hours to soon as the place isn't even open. Any ways it's always seem to be that they think being aggressive and threatening is the best way to motivate me. When all it does is annoy me and make me angry and not even want to comply.

Was Saturday My Last Day of Work?

I’ve been working for a large regional bank on contract for the past two years. They will not be extending it at the end of this month. That’s cool. 100% WFH. Nice hourly rate. Supportive supervisor. Mostly good people trying to get things done, despite being understaffed. My supervisor gave me a great performance review. They were recently acquired. There have been a few hiccups, mostly IT related. Yesterday the sales representative of the contract agency that I work for (through?) forwarded an email from the client company confirming that last Saturday was my last day. My workday starts in about 30 minutes. Yesterday I had no problem logging on and working as usual. Today, I plan to start on time, send a polite email to my client supervisor, and work until a human, not a buggy form-letter generator, tells me to stop. I’m not upset. I’m lucky that I’m…

Consultant Firms OT Payout Loophole Trend

Some background – I work in environmental consulting in California. At my last firm, they found a way to turn all staff (including field staff/ non-managers/ lower level staff) exempt from overtime payout. They made it so you'd get paid a normal hourly rate if you work overtime hours, only if you're meeting your utilization percentage (number of hours being billed directly to the client). I mentioned this to HR of the new company I transitioned to and she told me that was illegal. Fast forward a year later and this company has now also taken away OT payout from all staff levels even if they aren't managing people or projects. At first I didn't so much mind because I was staying strictly at 40 hours anyways due to my workload. A couple weeks ago a 2+ month long field project got dropped in my lap that will require 11+…

Is This Allowed? What should I do? (Serious)

Hey All, Long time lurker, first time poster here. The company I work for is headquartered in Colorado and I am currently working remotely in NC. This Company has places all over the country including New Jersey, California, and Missouri. Last Tuesday, they advised we have to decide to move to Colorado by 8/21 or our last day working is 10/8. So 60 days notice, no severence package and no moving bonus either. I'm not going to move, but this is slimy of them to avoid lay offs by “giving us a choice”. Anyone not in CO has to pretty much look for a job immediately to have hope of no breaks in paychecks. Is this allowed? I haven't signed anything or replied to them/ HR. If it's allowed is there anything I can do to fight back? Thank you all for help in advance!

Giving a 2 week notice before a 1 week vacation

I am anticipating a job offer that is better in pretty much every way than my current position. The timing of that offer may mean that I give a 2 week notice just before or during a week long vacation I’ve had approved for some time now. What’s the general consensus around doing this? For more context- I don’t want to burn bridges with my current boss (good person, potentially a good connection to keep) and don’t want to screw over the other employee in my position (even better person). Everyone else at this company I do not care about whatsoever. If it wasn’t for these 2 people I wouldn’t even give a notice. I’d like to start this new job asap, but maintain the connections that I care about.
