Is it normal for corporate-type offices to have alcohol?

I’ve been at my job for 3 weeks and am still learning the culture in the office. I’ve worked in office environments previously, but never before (aside from TV) have I seen so much liquor, particularly in one employee’s office. I believe this person is senior level (I don’t actually work with anyone in this office, my team is located elsewhere so I don’t really know other people’s roles/titles too well), and he has a liquor collection in his office that he insisted I could have some anytime? Wtf? He also showed me where some hard seltzers were located throughout the office. I asked if they had a lot of office parties or reserved those for clients and he said no. I jokingly said I’d come take a swig if I had a stressful day and he said I was more than welcome to, like seriously… How is that allowed…

Boss gives me grief when I take time off

I work in staff/management position that oversees a group of drivers. Right now is our busy time, but I asked for two days off to take my kid to school. The request was put in two months ago when it looked we would be fully staffed and he approved it. Yesterday, I sent some updates our about next week and mentioned I am off two days and also talked to a couple people who will handle parts of my job while I am gone. A little while later, my boss calls me and tells me I cannot take time off, he never approved it. I said look at your calendar and I put the request in two months ago, at that time not knowing three members of the staff would be off for sudden medical issues. He freaks out and starts going off that were screwed if I go and…

Sent to help another branch, then berated for not completing my own work

Small backstory: a management company for which I'm a supervisor runs 2 properties in my state. Mine has very few issues and is almost always in good order, never has backed up work tickets. The other has been a problem for years, never keeping employees or complying with guidelines. Last week, our new area manager came out and fired half the staff at the other location, and my team is sent out two to five days out of the week to assist the property for upcoming inspections. Every time I return from this other property, I'm berated by my manager for not completing certain things properly or quickly enough that would have been very easy to do were I not an hour away. I'm told that these complaints are coming from the corporate office, but that doesn't quite add up, because they have never once had a problem with my…

Dad Just Lost His Job, Can’t Afford to Live, and I Can’t Support My Parents

Hi all. Writing this to vent. First, some background: my father is an electrician by trade (a damn good one too). He worked in mines on industrial and mining equipment for much of his life. About 1997, he wanted to get out of the mine and bought a small business with some savings. It went quite well until about 2010. The business relied heavily on purchases from tourists in the area, and after 2008 tourism declined and many businesses in the area went under, including my parents'. Getting to my point: my parents' were forced to declare bankruptcy back in 2010 and despite being retirement age, Social Security just isn't enough. My mom and dad have hopped from job to job ever since. Both are in their 70s and have some health complications. Thankfully, my mother has some healthcare coverage from her state job, but she can no longer work.…

No overtime until after 50 hours?

I work nights for a trucking company that does not pay overtime until after 50 hours. I am a mechanic, I also do NOT have a CDL. I have been in this field for around 7 years and this is the 4th company I’ve worked for. I’ve never seen nor heard about this. How is this possible?

Not sure if I should be upset about this but I am

So I'm a contracted employee in an office setting. I actually enjoy what I do, even though some people in the office are not enjoyable to work with. I'm in between contracts right now, and I go back to work on Monday. A few days ago I was contacted to gauge my interest in a promotion of sorts. I would take a pay cut, but it comes with benefits. I said I would need more information (salary, benefit type, hours, job description etc) before I could make an informed decision, but said I was interested. The other day I got a call saying they're going ahead and offering me the position. The initial start date was supposed to be today, but I requested they change it so I could start Monday – the day I was originally going back to work anyway. The person on the phone sent me an…

No one talks in my office

I work in a small company with only 15 or so employees in the office and no one talks to each other while at their desks, even if its for something work related, they will send a slack Its very awkward to have someone 5 feet away message me asking for help with something. This is my first office job, I’m young and introverted/socially awkward and even I’m finding this type of communication to be odd. I got a hang of the corpo speak and emoji use but messaging people online that are within arms reach is just mind boggling to me. Whats even the point of being in office if everyone acts like theyre remote anyway.

“Please describe specific things about our company and why you want to work for us!” – included in the job posting through a recruiter for an anonymous company that you have to apply to first before you can see who the employer is.

This perfectly encapsulates the American job market right now.
