The economy in the US and the west has become parasitic

There is a point at which the economy as a whole has become so parasitic that it’s extracting wealth and productivity from regular people and leaving them with nothing. What is the solution? Well this is my solution. It may or may not work for you but it works for me. I work multiple jobs and save and invest aggressively. That’s my solution. First/primary job is for bills and necessities Second job is to build savings Third job (consulting projects) is to build a nest egg to invest on the stock market and in real estate What is your work around? Moving to a tiny island off the coast of Africa or in Peru is not a feasible solution since millions of people can’t move there at once and it’s not practical.

Auto deletion of email when on vacation / “out of office”

Sorry this is a bit ranty: I wish when we were away from work / on vacation etc we could normalize actually being away from work. When I am 'out of office' and my auto reply email is on, when I come back I come back to double the work – catch up on the old emails and then keep up with the new ones. It negates and even devalues any vacation relaxation I had. I wish it wouldn't be considered workplace/career suicide to put something like: “I am away from the office from X until Y. As I am away from the office, your email has been automatically deleted and will not be responded to. Please re-send your email on Y date and it will be responded to in the order recieved.” Am I crazy for thinking this is reasonable? I get laughed at at the office when I…

Advice for a professional but firm no to working over my shift.

Hello Reddit, I've been in my current position for almost a year now and just got a new manager (different from the one who hired me). This new manager is new to being a manager I think and essentially wants me to work for free in staying late or work a shift different from the one I signed up for and explicitly stated in my interviewing process. I'm salaried, so any extra time is just working for free in mind. I understand deadlines need to be met…blah…blah…blah, but this is a tech support role where we have shifts of people. I'm a senior role as I've been doing this for somewhere near 20 years, and I've only recently switched my mode of thinking to be that of me first, company second. What I'm really looking for is a professional but firm way to say no thanks, I'll stick to the…

New boss tried to deny sick leave for my daughters doctor appointment

I’ve been at my job for 14 months. Just as I started my daughter became ill, was hospitalized and has returned home. Every month she has an infusion. I work from the hospital on those days but I can never put in a full day, I’m always short. Even though I’m salary I use my sick leave to cover the hours. I’ve been doing this for a year. I was doing it for every appointment she had when she first came home. Then in January I get a new manager. It’s becoming quite clear that he over sold himself and he’s never been a supervisor of any kind. Then yesterday I turn in my time card (I’m salary non-exempt, so I have to put in time), my daughter had an appointment last week. I was short 2.5 hours, so I put in my sick time like I always do. I…

Getting a new job, have tons of sick time, totally checked out.

I got offered a better position in a better industry. I currently work a sales job that is 100% remote. It’s very high pressure, high ticket sales (that I’m currently working). My start date for the next position is about 3-4 weeks out, and I have accrued about 2 weeks of sick time at my current position. I’m totally checked out of my current job, and I would really love to take the next few weeks off. There is currently a TON of pressure at the current position and I just don’t feel connected, since I’m leaving. Otherwise, good company and good people. I have a great relationship with my current company and they’ve treated me quite well, been patient with me over my 1.5 years here, and overall quite easy-going outside of high-pressure sales targets. Would it be scummy to use all my sick time and resign immediately upon…

Is charging your personal phone while at work considered stealing electricity?

My boss got onto me today for charging my phone at work, saying I'm stealing the companies electricity for personal use. What do you guys think? I'm not on my phone all day or anything I just sometimes forget to charge it at night before I go to bed. It's a desk job. Edit: Update. Just found out today through an announcement to the team that our boss who made this comment to me is being let go at the end of the month. Probably why he was lashing out.

Serial sexual harasser was finally fired!

I just want to celebrate. The man (41M) who harassed me (22F at the time) was finally fired a year and a half after I reported him. It’s a shame it took two more women (including a minor) coming forward about his unwelcome advances for him to be fired. So much for a “no tolerance” policy, eh? I just feel bad for his wife. She works at the same company and she’s the sweetest lady ever. I can’t fathom why she married that piece of shit.

One week into my new job at Lidl’s and already being treated like crap and micro-managed into the ground, should I bother turning up?

Originally posted this in r/lidl yesterday however I updated a couple details and thought this sub was also appropriate for this I started my first shift exactly a week ago and honestly I’m really not impressed, aside from online training I have to constantly find managers (most of the time they’re busy or totally non-existent) to train me to do something. When they’re actually present they micro-manage and tell me to hurry up (How can I hurry up when I don’t even know where everything goes!) I shit you not, I took off a cardboard cover off of a box of cat food, quickly put it back on when I realise that wasn’t what I was supposed to be stocking and my manager gave me a scolding for it. I’ve got a shift tomorrow and I’m debating even showing up, I’m contractually required to hand in a week’s notice but…

Frustrated!

First, for a bit of history, I am disabled. I have autism, tourettes, and a joint disability. I require accommodations for these things and it makes it very hard for me to find jobs, because they will often have sneaky wording in their applications. “We hire disabled people as long as they can carry out the job requirements,” and then the requirements are being able to speak and communicate well, stand for the whole shift, etc etc. I had to quit a job after one day of work because they refused to provide a chair, I had grounds to sue but decided against it because it just seemed like a bigger process than what it was worth. After months (I had 7 months worth of savings, and am now down to 1) of searching for a job I could do, applying to every job I could, I finally got a…

Antiwork flair discussion

There are a lot of posts on antiwork along the lines of 'the company I work for did a terrible thing'. Sometimes these posts are seeking validation or solidarity OP can't find elsewhere. Sometimes OP wants support or advice. Sometimes OP wants this to be a jump off point for a parger discussion or a call to action. I think all of these posts are valid and appropriate for this sub. I also think that regardless of a given OP's desires, there are comments for each category (solidaritysupportsolutions). What does the community and the Mods think of some sort of flair or other system of classification that OPs can use to focus the comments on what they're seeking?
